Get To Work, Mr. Bush

By Argile Stox
Dec. 17, 2006

Maybe I am just bored.  I should be in bed.  However, there is so much going on in the world I just can’t keep my thoughts to myself. At this moment I would like to revisit the Iraq war.  Why are we still there?  Any government that is set up in Iraq is going to be a puppet for the United States .  What I am really happy about is the fact that the newly elected democrats made it perfectly clear that the United States is not staying in Iraq forever.  The government of Iraq is going to have to get its stuff together, fast. On that same note, the government of Afghanistan is going to have to get their stuff together, faster.

I would also like to revisit the issue of not showing the caskets of our brave troops being off-loaded from the cargo planes that touchdown at all the major airports in our country.  Why is that?  I believe that there should be a short segment on each of the network broadcasts stations and cable – showing the caskets being off-loaded from the cargo planes, each and every day. I also wonder why our president is not present at the airports when the caskets are off-loaded on to the tarmac.

Back in the civil war, President Abraham Lincoln seized General Robert E. Lee’s estate in Arlington Virginia –and started burying the civil war dead at his front door. What President Abraham Lincoln was saying to General Robert E. Lee, “This is the real cost of War!” Today, we know it as Arlington National Cemetery . When President Bush’s term finally ends, our new president should seize his ranch and start burying our brave troops who died in the line of duty – right at his front door.

I would also like to revisit the statement by the incoming democrats, “That there is going to be a lot of work done in the first one hundred hours in the House and Senate – when the democrats are finally sworn in and seated. Sure, they can legislate all they want in one hundred hours. However, all the Bills that are passed by both houses eventually lands on our current president’s desk. George W. Bush has not used his veto power much, lately. Just wait until his desk is inundated by truck loads of paper for him to sign into law or veto.

The population of the United States wants change. OK, the democrats took back the House of Representatives and it may be the Senate. The Senate is up for grabs depending upon the health of a senator who is currently in the hospital. If that senator vacates his seat in the senate, the Governor of South Dakota (who is a Republican) can and will fill the seat with a Republican. What that boils down to, is that if there is a tie in the Senate –the Vice President breaks the tie with an up or down vote.

I do not have a crystal ball, neither do I want one. However, the next two years of President Bush’s term in office –is going to be very contentious. What ever political liquidity of power he once had is long gone. At this very moment, Mr. Bush is wondering – “What went wrong, who is responsible for what went wrong, and who we should choose as a sacrificial lamb to blame it on.” Mr. Bush, all your questions can be answered if you just look at the nameplate on your desk.

At one time I was very excited when the democrats won anything. Today, I must take a mature “wait and see” attitude. I will be 53 years old this coming July. Eight years of my life will have been consumed by Mr. Bush. My life was turned upside down for six years. Mr. Bush, can you give me back those horrible six years? Yeah, realistically I know you cannot. Will I ever forgive you? I do not really know. It would help me as well as 100 million Americans if you placed your face on TV and apologized for the mistakes that you have made in your presidency. That would help a little.

Mr. Bush, your worst nightmare has come true –the Democrats will be in power this coming January –2007. I truly hope that this new reality will make you sweat. I would enjoy seeing your face dripping with sweat, like the Nixon – Kennedy Debates. I wish no harm, Mr. Bush. I just want to see you squirm under the hot lights during your press conferences. Mr. Bush, maybe it was not all your fault. If that’s the case, then parade all of the individuals who gave you wrong advice –in front of the TV cameras. Let the American people see who whispered in your ears.

Watergate, the Pentagon Papers, the killing of students at Kent State University , recessions, and other blunders has turned this writer into a very skeptical person. What really blew me away? When President Ronald Reagan sat before a congressional committee and said, “I don’t remember.” In addition, I was blown away when President William Jefferson Clinton continuously denied that he had sex with Monica Lewinsky. Can you blame me for being just a little skeptical?

Mr. Bush, you have two years to go. I would really enjoy seeing “Mission Accomplished” flash on the TV screen. I would really enjoy reading that you have finally decided to fund the “No Child Left Behind” Act. Two years is a lot of time. You can get so much done in two years. Mr. Bush, you have been in office for six years. I believe that your training period is over. Now, get to work!
