Dec. 16, 2006 Years have gone by and an African American male is still in danger of his life while walking in the streets of New York. It has been no mystery to those who are members of the
communities that are majority of Black or Latino, that we have some serious problems regarding the Police that have sworn to uphold the law and to protect us. I must admit that the problems stem from the Politicians that sit by and make no official statements about what is going on in the community. The 44th precinct in the Bronx has been accused of their officers being unfair to the residents that live in the community and also for murdering an 18 year old who was being pursued into a building at 1240 Walton Avenue in the Bronx. The Police shot and killed him and stated that he had weapon and they struggled with him in the lobby of that building. The police department and their aggressive behavior towards the residents of this Bronx community have become fed up and they have taken the protest outside of the 44th precinct in the Bronx. Al Sharpton who seems to be picking and choosing his involvement these days has been out there on the streets these days trying to deal with both incidents and this has brought him into the picture once again crying out for justice for the communities where youths have been killed by the Police. Al Sharpton is not an elected official and his presence is wanted yes, but when he ran for almost every office in the Manhattan where are the people that he has helped hiding. Our elected officials in NYC are doing nothing to stop what is a war zone for Blacks and Latino’s in NYC. You can feel the tension when you are on the
streets and there is some Police activity, you want to run but hey you better not do that because you are subject to be mistaken for the perpetrator and be shot to death. We need a solution in NYC and we need a solution that is going to last. People of these communities need to stop electing these weak officials that refuse to damage their Political status by remaining silent. In the Bronx I have not seen the borough president or the City Councilman making any firm statement to assure the residents that justice is going to be served. I have seen Al Sharpton on the street but where is Carrion, the Bronx Borough President? I saw him on television smiling with a shovel in his hand digging up some dirt for publicity but where is his voice in the
community? There is time for a change and there is time for strong leadership in order to protect these residents during this time of fear because of the recent activities by the police. The harsh statements by NYPD are not going to get it and we need there to be strong measures taken against anyone who breaks the law but the sentence is to be given out by the judge and not by the NYPD on the street.
