Government By Poll

By Mike Haran
Dec. 14, 2006

The media are now ecstatic over the Bush administration poll numbers 27%, no 21% they chortle as if his progress, or lack thereof, is either good or bad for them.  I saw a TV interviewer castigate Tony Blair for not changing his position regarding the war in Iraq , despite only having a 17% approval in the UK .  What is even more astounding is that she sounded indignant, as though he had to answer to her for having the audacity to continue his present course.  Blair did what he is supposed to do which was to tell her that he wasn’t elected subject to media generated public opinion.

Those in power know that it doesn’t really matter what point of view the media is pushing at the present time, as events have a way of out running them anyway.  A low approval rating was probably allowed for by the White House, the two more years yet on the presidency giving them leeway regarding public opinion, after all you only get to vote when the polls open, not every other day in between.  As Bush is not running for
re-election any negative publicity is just water under the bridge.

The media are in the business of making those with little knowledge of anything to do with international affairs feel good regarding their prejudices.  In no way will the present media posturing have an effect upon the next election.  The situation is analogous to that during the cold war when Ronald Reagan deployed Pershing intermediate range missiles in Europe bringing about massive street demonstrations throughout the world whipped up by the popular media.  Those cartoons in the papers were horrible and so were the costumes topped with artificial heads.  It was amusing to watch him traveling in a motorcade waving imperiously left and right, a smile upon his face, a king greeting his adoring subjects.  He didn’t budge and managed to get re-elected, and so did his vice president.  Democrats shouldn’t take to much heart from these low poll numbers.

I am not comparing George Bush with Ronald Reagan, rather I am attempting to illustrate how meaningless is the present stage of the never ending media campaign against conservatives, a campaign beginning with Water Gate, the media believing that for now and for ever after they have been anointed to fight the evil Republicans.

If the Democrats want to play the game this way (media generated polls) they will have no right to criticize the Republicans if they deliberately lose the next election and really leave them holding the can regarding Iraq .  How many Democrats know the first thing about the military, an organization they instinctively feel alien to through their anti military indoctrination. The last democrat exclusion from the administration, the congress and the senate will be nothing compared to that following the military disaster they will create.

This is of course a cynical way of looking at things and I would not expect the Republicans to stoop to such levels ,even though the Democrats have by initially supporting the war and then withdrawing support when it became politically expedient, their mealy mouthed excuses lower than the tricks pulled by the defenders of OJ.
