Cybersleuthing On A Slippery Slope: Dead Prostitutes

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
Dec. 14, 2006

Here in the USA we recently had a series of murders of prostitutes in Atlantic City , and the victims were dumped in a drainage ditch.  And now, across the Atlantic, we have a series of murders of prostitutes, dumped in a shallow creek near Ipswitch , England .

Hmmm...something a bit similar there.  A recent piece on these pages speculated about the New Jersey murders:  http://www.useless-knowledge.com/1234/06nov/article109.html.  Further speculation may be interesting.

We don’t know enough to say there is anything other than superficial similarities between the two series.  But it may be worth comparing them.  For example, what if a man with a suppressed urge to kill women was on a business trip, out of his own country, and freed from the constraints of his usual surroundings and family, perhaps, decided to act out on his fantasy and kill a few prostitutes?  What if he liked it?  What if he returned to his usual abode and decided to continue?  Or perhaps he was just visiting London on another business trip and is really from somewhere else entirely.  Have there been clusters of murdered prostitutes found in other areas of the world where business meetings or conventions are held?  There are certainly sufficient  differences between the cases that linking them is nothing but rank speculation.  We know the women in Atlantic City were found with heads pointed East, and with bare feet. One of the women, at least, near Ipswitch, was found nude.  Most serial killers have a stereotyped pattern and stick with it.  On the other hand, it appears that the women in both sets of cases were strangled.  And we don’t know if they were originally placed prone and headed East or not.  But they were found in a superficially similar location, a shallow ditch or creek.  So there are similarities and differences.

Not being privy to police reports in either series of cases, I have no idea if there are any other linkages between them.  But in cases such as these, it may pay to think outside the box and consider ALL the possibilities.  This is the equivalent of Albert Einstein’s “thought experiments” which resulted in his creating the theory of relativity.  If one can’t (yet) accelerate objects to near the speed of light and measure the length of a span of time, Einstein could still think logically about it and create a hypothesis about what would happen.  Just so, we can take what meager facts we have and perform thought experiments and reach possible conclusions.

Is there anything about the murders in London which would suggest a Muslim connection?  None that I know of other than some circumstantial evidence:  London has an extremely large Muslim population, so much so that it is frequently referred to as Londonstan.   Also, the number of crimes such as rape and murder committed by Muslims against local non-Islamic women in Norway and elsewhere in Europe has risen markedly in recent years.  Not much to hang Sherlock Holmes’ hat on, but worth thinking about.

And so, if I were a homicide detective investigating these murders, I would at least consider the possibility that they were linked and also the possibility that they were in some way linked to Islam.  Is there any DNA evidence which could be compared between Atlantic City and London ?  Has anybody even considered that?  Does the Ipswitch creek run east-west at the point where the women were found?  Were the women barefoot?

Indeed, wild speculation.  But sometimes that is what it takes to solve crimes.  Is it probable that the two series are connected?  No, not likely.  But then it didn’t seem likely that time would increasingly slow as one approached the speed of light until Einstein THOUGHT about it.
