Iraq And Other Observations

By Craig Chamberlain
Dec. 11, 2006

The Iraq Study Group is simply advocating the path of least resistance. I think it has something to do with their age. All ten of them are senior citizens, and while old geezers can be hell raisers they're usually lethargic creatures who will do anything for a little peace and quiet. One reason, I think, for all of this is that since they aren't going to be part of the future they don't need to worry about it. This is a sign of things to come. With millions of Americans getting rady to buy rocking chairs and take up shuffleboard, and not nearly as many young people to support them or to fight for them, we are going to be in a lot of trouble.

Another problem we have with Iraq is will power. Our troops are the best in the world, maybe the best in the history of the world. The people they're fighting for on the other hand...I'm not so sure about. Americans have never been a patient people, our enemies know that we get easily frustrated and they are playing it to their advantage. We want peace and quiet, we've been this way since world war two. Maybe we think our victory in that war entitles us to sit on our laurels. But in every war since we've only looked for a graceful exit, not victory. Either we fight to win, and win in such a convincing manner that there can be no room for debate over who won, or we stay here and don't fight at all. And since the latter isn't really an option, we have to embrace the former.

Now, I'm going to say something truly unpopular but something I think needs to be said anyway. Augusto Pinochet, dictator of Chile from 1973-1991, has died at the age of 91. What the press will say about him will be mnostly half truths, the rest will be out right lies. Yes, Pinochet was a dictator. Yes, he closed parliment. Yes, he ignored civil rights. Yes, he saved his country. Everyone goes on and on about 3,000 that were killed during his 18 years in office, power corrupts and the General was no different. But that number is hardly equivalent to dictators that were so often embraced by the MSM and the intellecutals in our country. Mengistu killed that many before breakfast, or what about their favorite, Fidel Castro? They positively gush over him, and he has caused a lot more graves to be dug than 3,000. It's always a tragedy when a dictator takes over, but better to have one that leaves the country better than he found it.

That's why the left will never forgive Pinochet. A general from the provinces comes along and moves against their pet Allende, and does the exact opposite from what conventional wisdom says he should have done. Instead of nationalizing the economy he freed it up. Chile has the longest run of economic growth in Latin America. Pinochet disproved their favorite theories. He acted against a soviet puppet, and earned the eternal hatred of the left. If Allende had been left in power he would have declared himself president for life, outlawed all political parties except the communists, and Chile would still be trying to fix the mess. Instead it is democratic, and prosperous. In 1990 Pinochet lost a plebiciste to stay in power, and he listened to the people and left office. Was he perfect? No. Did he use dictatorial methods to get what he wanted? Yes. Did he leave Chile better off? Yes. When the elected governemnt is actively trying to make a dictatorship and ruin the country then the country needs men like Pinochet to stop them. He made himself dictator, but stopped a far worse one.

Cynthia McKinney, the woman so crazy that she lost in a year that was positively wonderful for democrats, has introduced a bill to impeach President Bush. This is pure theater, something to make her more popular with the Hugo Chavez democrats(now there's proof that dictatorship can come through elections). Somehow I think this bill will be revived when the democrats take over in 2007. I know Nancy has said impeachment is off the table, but there is that gleam in her eye and the sneer on Rangels face that, I don't know, won't let me believe them. "Well since Cynthia brought it up we'll take a closer look at it." I can just see one of them saying that. That's what we have to look forward to. Two years of investigations and fake scandal that end in "GATE." Can't someone in the media be a little more creative the next time there is a mess in Washington?

Even if they don't impeach it will be two years of investigations, and testimonies. "What did you know and when did you know it?" And I know that the GOP didn't do a bang up job over the last four or five years, but they did vote to put up a border fence, you can kiss that goodbye. Tax cuts helped the economy during terrorist attacks and recession. Those will be history before too long. Yes, the democrats will have everything in order soon. And to be honest I am not looking forward to it at all.
