"Stocking Stuffers" For 2007

By Dwayne Hines II
Dec. 11, 2006

In this season to be merry, here are a few stocks to stuff your stockings with for the coming year. These stocks should do well in 2007, and even better in 2008.

Microvision Inc.

According to Yahoo Finance, Microvision, Inc. engages in the design and marketing of scanned beam display and image capture products for professional and consumer applications. It provides Nomad Expert Technician System, a wireless and wearable computer with a head-worn see-through display; and prototype color scanned beam displays, including hand-held, head-worn, and projection versions, as well as provides Flic laser bar code scanner. Microvision offers its products and services for automotive, defense, aerospace, industrial, vehicles, entertainment, computing and visual simulation, military, medical, and consumer applications. One of the reasons that Microvision is expected to have an exciting couple of years ahead is the use of its product in cell phones. Cell phones currently display a small viewing screen; with Microvision's technology, that screen can be expanding exponentially to a point where a cell phone can present a screen larger than a laptop. Imagine how easy it will be to whip through business travel without having to carry a laptop. Powerpoint presentations will fit in the pocket and be available anywhere. Microvision's technology is truly magic. For a more in-depth overview of this unique company, check out the blog of one of its employees: http://www.microvision.blogspot.com/

According to Yahoo Finance, Ambient Corporation, a late-stage development company, operates in the Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) industry in North America. The company designs, develops, commercializes, and markets BPL equipment, technologies, and services, which provide optimal solutions for the utility and multi-dwelling unit markets. Its BPL technology enables electric utilities and other owners of electrical distribution systems, and their system operators to deliver a suite of Internet protocol-based services using their existing power distribution infrastructure. The company also offers engineering and installation of BPL equipment. Its BPL products provide consumer oriented broadband Internet access and voice over Internet protocol telephony services; utility services, such as automated meter reading, remote outage detection, real-time pricing, and direct load control; and government and industry applications, including video security surveillance and industrial process monitoring. Ambient Corporation provides super fast broadband connections over powerlines. Several big trials are underway across the country, and the major public utility commissions who have been reviewing this emerging technology have been favorable of its use for consumers. The infrastructure is already in place for its use. This technology will have two major income streams - consumer use for broadband hook-ups, and SmartGrid applications for utility companies to monitor their processes. This technology is expected to really take off in the next couple of years.

Microsoft
Trading symbol - MSFT
Everyone is aware of Microsoft. The stock fell out of favor after the tech bubble burst in 2000. Microsoft's offerings since then have not been too inspiring - until now. Another huge tech spending wave is about to hit the globe - total system upgrades from Microsoft (Vista), Apple (Leopard) and a mandated spending spree by the U.S. government on the new Internet, IPv6, which will all hit at once. Most any tech should do very well for the next year, as momentum for equipment and software replacement picks up around mid-2007 and accelerates into 2008. Other ways to play this is to buy the composite NASDAQ tracking group (QQQQ) or tech sector index funds.

Purchasing or giving these stocks as gifts may bring cheer in the new year, or the following year. Disclosure : the author does own some of these stocks, of course.
