Dec. 10, 2006 Article, AP, by Nahal Toosi: “ New York school lets students take charge”, quote: “One recent day at a Brooklyn Free School , the “schedule” included the following: chess, debate, filming horror movies, and making caves for Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles.” “Not that the students had to go to any of these sessions. At this school students don’t get grades, don’t have homework, don’t take tests, and don’t even have to go to class. Unless they want to.” Great! This story was really about 42 kids that are stuck in this “Free school” after “hundreds of free schools opened…in the 1960s and 1970s…and most shut down…” (Because they were viewed as a failed liberal experiment). The article assured me though that “the Albany Free School and Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts (naturally) have persisted.” Definitions of “proficiency” are termed “flexible” because “On any given day, a student may be playing chess, reading a book, practicing yoga (a religious exercise) or helping mummify a chicken.” Someone should call the ACLU and PETA and complain about that kid reading the book! Then there was this article: “15 grandmothers school struggling students”. Quote: Kindergarteners and First-graders in Bonita Springs , (FL) are getting some “old school” education. A group of 15 grandmothers logged more than 1,500 hours volunteering with struggling students at the Bonita Springs Charter School last year.” The grandmothers apparently came to the rescue of the children because their regular teachers weren’t up to the task. Quote: “…grandmas help children learn in a different way than teachers.” (Who only make the kids struggle?) “They go over the areas where the children need help, like letters, numbers and hand-eye coordination.” You know; those areas that the teachers have forgotten how to teach! Salt Lake City , UT : “A retired school district program director and her husband are accused of stealing millions in federal grant money through a scheme that involved distributing illegally photocopies books to students…” This was a “47 count indictment” where “In one instance…the district paid $93 for each copy of a book that was selling…for $13.22.” At least the former educators knew their math! Costa Mesa , CA : “Student leaders at a community college voted to drop the Pledge of Allegiance after a tense meeting in which one flag-waving pledge supporter berated them as anti-American radicals.” NOW HOLD ON! One person is only allowed to take God out of schools; not fight to keep God in schools! We must tolerate all anti-Americans now. The Democrats won didn’t they? AH! Schools are really having it rough! In the article: “Professor takes on students’ tech habits”, by Mike Wilson of the AP we learn: “During lectures, they answer their cell phone, text message their friends and play games on their laptop computers.” This is considered rude student behavior but “…it’s not their fault” because “It’s the same behavior we’re seeing in the rest of society.” So the liberal plan is to have “more workshops” that they can charge admission to teach tech “management” instead of just stating a simple rule in class that cell phone usage during class is prohibited and punishable. A person who is found “texting” when he’s supposed to be “listening” will receive a failing grade for that day’s subject. Or they can spend a few dollars in a “workshop” to learn not to ignore their professors. Then there was this report from Bloomington , Il : “Professor accused of grabbing, kissing student” (Perhaps, (I first thought) to get the student from using a cell phone in class?) Imaging my shock at reading: “Patrick James O’Gara, 63, [the professor] was charged with “official misconduct” after he “grabbed and kissed a male student – then asked what part the student wanted.” OH! I should explain that this professor was a professor of “theater” and the “grab” and “kiss” was for a “part” in a school production; not any particular “part” of the professor. Then there was the: “Teacher [who was] remorseful over drug sales attorney says” from Honolulu , Hawaii . Quote: “A public school teacher has admitted selling drugs to an undercover officer.” But, “he has expressed remorse. He feels terrible!” The only words missing from that sentence are: “…that he was caught in the act, your Honor!” At least the students in Bryan , Texas are getting help from “Counselors” who “went from class to class…to talk to students the day after a teacher [Stephen Bruce Unger Jr., 27] was arrested on two counts of indecency with a child.” There was some “good” news on the educational front. Topeka, Kansas: “An audit concluded that state school districts may be receiving millions of dollars…” in state aid for students who are “ineligible” as “at risk” children. It seems 17 percent of 500 “Free-lunch students” should not be getting free lunches. It sure is a good thing someone is checking up on all those chubby kids! Detroit , MI : “Wayne County Circuit Judge Susan Borman ruled that the teacher’s union cannot be legally punished for a 16 day strike in September.” “The union is not responsible…individual teachers elected not to obey [court] orders.” So then are we going to lock up all the renegade teachers who defied the court’s orders? Probably not and that is good news for the union. Must keep those dues a rolling into the coffers of the NEA hierarchy! Even though teachers continually cry “poor” while being paid an average $45,000 yearly for only 180 days of work (Which is similar to members of Congress making over $150,000 a years for only 2 days of weekly work annually); comes this report from Washington, D.C. “More college presidents earning $500K or more”. Imagine, 112 of 853 college presidents surveyed are making a half-million dollars a year and people continue to wonder why college tuitions continue to skyrocket! There is hope however. Detroit Free Press, by Gina Dam Roni: “Teen creates nuclear fusion in his basement”. Despite the fact Thiago Olson goes to “ Stoney Creek High School in Rochester Hills , Michigan ” young Mr. Olson has researched and created nuclear fusion in the basement of his home. He did this himself at age 17 and allows no credit to teachers or schools for his personal research. He probably realized the NEA would want a cut of any future earnings. ------------ About the Author: Michael John McCrae has contributed over 500 articles to Useless-Knowledge.com.
