The "Labor Of Love"

By Skip Toomaloo
Dec. 10, 2006

“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” Hebrews 6:10

When the Gospel of Christ was to be preached, the word of the Lord said it was to be first preached in Jerusalem. The Gospel would then be spread throughout Judea and Samaria and finally to the world’s most remote locations.

The Gospel was to be preached “to the Jew first” and then the Greeks and the other Gentiles. This is why the Apostles entered the local synagogues first. It was important that the people of the prophesies heard of the fulfillment of those prophesies so they could make up their mind toward repentance and faith.

The Gospel went among the people only when the Jews had expended their choices and their chance at salvation. The Father of the Hebrews, Abraham, had been told that every nation would be blessed by the example of his faith that led to righteousness. That was not an idle promise of God. That was an assurance that every person in the world would have opportunity for a relationship with the true God.

In this age there is no difference in the matter of spreading the Gospel of Jesus. The Jew must be first in our hearts and in our message. Jesus is still the Messiah of the Jew “first”. He is the King of all Kings and he is the “greater son” of King David. God promised David that his throne would be forever established through the greater son. The role of Israel in God’s eternity is assured.

But we must also look at the “ministry” of the Christian. This is largely a ministry to the saints of God. All the people of faith in the true God of Heaven are considered “saints”.

We know of saints and living souls who are born again in belief in the Savior. The Apostle Paul wrote to “the saints” in Thessalonica, Philippi, Colossae, Ephesus, Rome and Galatia, as well as other places. The “General Epistles” of John and Peter and Jude and James are written to living people, considered saints (separated ones) of God by the atoning blood of Jesus.

I suppose there are not many believing Christians who walk into synagogues these days to preach the Gospel of Christ. There are several Christian outreaches and there are some very bold individuals unafraid of following the Commands of Jesus, but much of the ministry to the Jew has become more like political diplomatic relations where everyone gets equal time, equal weight and equal worth for their particular religious stance.

That does not trust or respect the Lord.

Ministry is important to give the saints the tools they need to preach what the world needs to hear. We “minister” to the saints. We evangelize those who are not saints in hope of their joining the structure titled “The Body of Christ”.

We protect the name of God and we give foundation to the Gospel when we minister to the body of believers. God does not ever forget these labors of love, but adds blessing and spiritual gifts to support of the ministry.

As Jesus gave himself “a ransom for many” we give ourselves to the furtherance of his message of love, faith, hope and peace.

Christians are to “be strong in the Lord” and in his power. Trust God. The scriptural examples are plain enough and complete enough. The admonishments of scripture are sound and trustworthy. Though the scriptures declare “every man a liar” God is true and he does not forget what we show “toward His name”.
