The Best And Worst Of The Bowl Season

By Mark Gelbart
Dec. 6, 2006

A big collective whine echoed across the United States last Sunday and the nation's sonar pinpointed its origin to Ann Arbor, Michigan. The wolverines don't get any sympathy from me. They had their shot at Ohio State and they blew it. The Buckeyes played a bad game against Michigan, committing numerous turnovers, yet they were victorious. Odds are Ohio State would rout Michigan in a rematch, especially if they were the team that played a perfect game and Michigan stumbled and fumbled their way around the field like Ohio State did. With the announcement that Ohio State was to meet Flordia in the national championship game, the bowl match-ups were set and it's a better-than-average year for bowl games though there are about sixteen too many. Here's my guide on which ones worth watching, which ones are must see, and which ones should be skipped.

The Poinsetta Bowl--TCU vs. Northern Illinois--Worth watching. Northern Illinois has one of the better running backs in the country. Texas Christian may or may not slow him down, but they'll outscore him.

The Las Vegas Bowl--Brigham Young vs. Oregon--Worth watching. Oregon always has an inventive offense, however, they're suffering a down year and Brigham Young is back...well, back to whatever level they used to be.

The New Orleans Bowl--Rice vs. Troy--Skip. They should re-name this the patsy bowl. I think I'm going to be busy counting the bricks on the outside of my house.

The Birmingham Bowl--S. Florida vs. East Carolina--Skip. How oh how did E. Carolina make it to a bowl?

The New Mexico Bowl--N. Mexico vs. San Jose State--Skip. San Jose's a homefield tomato can for N. Mexico.

The Armed Forces Bowl--Utah vs. Tulsa--Skip. Unless you're a Ute or a Golden Tornado.

The Hawaii Bowl--Hawaii vs. Arizona State--Worth Watching. June Jones has Hawaii scoring sixty points a game. Should be a nip and tuck shootout against a PAC 10 team.

The Motor City Bowl--Central Michigan vs. Middle Tennessee State--Skip. MTSU gave up fifty-two to the Gamecocks late in the season. They stink.

The Emerald Bowl--UCLA vs. Florida State--Skip. Florida State belongs in a bowl--the toilet bowl.

The Independence Bowl--Alabama vs. Oklahoma State--Skip. Oh boy! 6-6 vs. 6-6. It's the game of the century!

The Texas Bowl--Rutgers vs. Kansas State--Worth Watching. Rutgers is a tough team and they belong in a better bowl than this. Kansas State upset Texas. Could be interesting.

The Holiday Bowl--Texas A&M vs. California--Worth Watching. California faded down the stretch while A&M was on fire. One of the better non-BCS matchups.

The Music City Bowl--Clemson vs. Kentucky--Worth Watching. As usual Clemson underachieved, but they're a dangerous team. Kentucky can score some points.

The Sun Bowl--Oregon State vs. Missouri--Worth Watching albeit just barely. Missouri can't play smash mouth football.

The Liberty Bowl--South Carolina vs. Houston--Worth Watching. An interesting intersectional matchup. SEC vs. Conference USA. Which is the toughest conference? The answer: a rooster will cock a doodle doo.

Champs Sports Bowl--Maryland vs. Purdue--Skip. Unless you're a fan of a defense made out of rice paper like the boilermakers have.

Insight.com Bowl--Texas Tech vs. Minnesota--Skip. Stupidest name for a bowl gets two lousy teams. Can you say poetic justice?

Meineke Car Care Bowl--Boston College vs. Navy--Skip. A mismatch. The service academies just aren't competitive with a top twenty-five team.

The Alamo Bowl--Texas vs. Iowa--Skip. Unless you're a longhorn fan and want to see your team trample a loser.

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl--Georgia vs. Virginia Tech--Must See. Well, I'm a diehard Dawg fan so I might be a little biased. Still, this should be a good game. A young dawg team struggled this year but turned it around late and could pull off a minor upset here.

MPC Computers Bowl--Miami vs. Nevada--Skip. Rumor has it some of Miami's players will be paroled in time for the game.

AT&T Cotton Bowl--Auburn vs. Nebraska--Worth Watching. Another interesting intersectional matchup.

Outback Bowl--Tennessee vs. Penn State--Worth Watching. Joe Pa's not going to be very happy when he sees what Danny Ainge does to his defense.

Capital One Bowl--Arkansas vs. Wisconsin--Must See. Wisconsin is 11-1 but 0-1 against tough teams. They're overrated. The razorbacks inventive rushing attack is what makes this game must see. Please treat yourself, if you haven't seen this team play.

Toyota Gator Bowl--West Virginia vs. Georgia Tech--Worth Watching. Can Tech's ferocious defense stop West Virginia's wide open offense?

Rose Bowl--Michigan vs. USC--Must See. Will the whiners beat the chokers?

Tostitoes Fiesta Bowl--Oklahoma vs. Boise State--Worth watching. Can Boise State be competitive against a real opponent. I doubt it.

Fed Ex Orange Bowl (Fed Up by now?)--Louisville vs. Wake Forest--Worth Watching. A good blue collar team against an explosive offense.

All State Sugar Bowl--LSU vs. Notre Dame--Worth Watching. Notre Dame doesn't really belong in a BCS bowl. LSU does. Watch the fighting Irish become the chased, harassed, and beat up Irish.

International Bowl--Cincinnatti vs. Western Michigan--Skip. I have an appointment to unplug my septic tank.

GMAC Bowl--Southern Mississippi vs. Ohio--Skip. I plan to read War and Peace backwards that night.

BCS Championship--Ohio State vs. Florida--Must See. Florida's going to show the Buckeyes how the SEC plays defense. Luckily for OSU, Florida's offense stinks. The score will be low but the Buckeyes will prevail.
