Mexico's Woes

By Craig Chamberlain
Dec. 6, 2006

Now that President Calderon has taken over in Mexico we will see if he has the ability to govern the country effectively, and have the strength to confront the countries many problems. Political corruption, political strife, economic weakness, and emigration from Mexico. But Calderon's biggest problem is Senor Lopez Obrador, the runner up in the July Presidential election. A loud mouth leftist who insists that he is the real winner of the election. He has had himself sworn in as President and formed his own government to be a parallel to the real government in Mexico City. Imagine if John Kerry had declared the 2004 election a fraud and had himself sworn in as President and formed a rival government in Boston. It's not exactly a recipe for social harmony or political stability.

To further complicate the problem, President Calderon's National Action Party(PAN) is in the minority in both houses of the Mexican Congress. The leftist parties PRI and PRD have the majority between them and can block the reforms that Calderon needs to enact. Calderon has promised to reform the Mexican economy, reform it so that the Mexican people won't have to leave Mexico to find work. We will have to wait and see whether that last part about getting immigration to stop was serious or just a sop to the United States. But in truth, Calderon, like all Mexican politicians, seems to think that unrestricted immigration to the United States is a God given right.

President Calderon could make a major economic reform, that would also make the Mexican government look at immigration as a negative, not a positive. He could privatize the Mexican oil company. This would fore further economic reforms. The Mexican government has used the oil company like a one way piggy bank, always taking money out but never putting any money in. (Mexico hasn't built any new platforms in quite a while, or made needed investments). But as long as the Mexican government has the money from oil to fill its treasury it doesn't care too much about the people, and is quite happy to see people come to the U.S. Privatization would make the oil company more efficient, take it out of government hands. With the company out of government hands it would need more taxpayers to fund its treasury. With this need for more people it might be forced to take the illegal flood on the U.S. border seriously.

Calderon has other problems that he needs to confront. Mexico has a high crime rate, especially in the border towns. Gangs have taken over virtually every city on the border with the police on their payroll or too afraid to confront them. Kidnapping and murder are rampant, and they are beginning to spill into the U.S. President Calderon has promised a crackdown, but it remains to be seen whether or not he will be able to attack the problem.

Worst for him is the political situation. The leftist lawmakers consider him an illegitmate President and he won't be too inclined to work with him on anything of importance. Most likely President Calderon will end up making concessions and get nothing in return.

Mexico's problems are serious and their problems are our problems. Mexicos best solution is to fix itself, not to export their problems to us. Let's hope that Calderon is successful and be willing to lend a hand for them to fix their problems.
