By Patrick Hurley Aug. 31, 2006 If you can get to Las Vegas before 3:00 p.m. PDT you can put in your bet for the eventual BCS Champion of College Football. I am about to tell you which team that will be. Unfortunately, I will not be betting on it. I am content enough to make the #1 pick! Before I tell you who will be holding that beautiful Tiffany crystal over their heads after the BCS Championship on January 8, 2007 in Glendale, Arizona, let me tell you who it will NOT be... USC. I love my Trojans, but they have been DECIMATED by their star running backs and offensive linemen departing early to the NFL. Matt Leinart is gone and the two quarterbacks trying to replace him...can't. I would not be surprised if USC doesn't even win the Pac-10! Notre Dame. I love Charlie Weiss. I believe he will be one of the top five coaches in college football for the next several years. But, the Irish have too tough of a schedule as usual and they will find a way to lose to teams they should beat, like Michigan State last year. Their first five games...at Georgia Tech, Penn St. Michigan, at Michigan State and Purdue is going to knock them out of contention early. Michigan. I am not a Lloyd Carr fan. The Wolverines lost five games last year. By the end of this season the alumni and the athletic director will not be Lloyd Carr fans, either. Florida State. I have two words for you why they will not even be in the national championship game. Drew Weatherford. This guy is not a great quarterback. FSU cannot win it all on defense alone. Miami. Same problem. They don't have a championship quarterback. Great defense. Spotty offense. They also open against Florida State on Monday night. Should be a great game and eliminate one of them right away. Texas. They are LOADED! But, they no longer have Vince Young and I do not believe they can beat Oklahoma in their annual Red River Valley shootout. The Big Twelve may be the toughest conference this year with those two teams, Texas Tech, an improved Nebraska team and Colorado with their dynamic new coach, Dan Hawkins, who moved over to Boulder after taking Boise State to new heights in Division I-A. So, who are the likely candidates to make it to the final game? Ohio State, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Auburn. Auburn. They get their three toughest games at home, LSU, Florida and Georgia. And, these games are spread out giving the Tigers a chance to prepare. Of course, they are AT Alabama, but Auburn usually finds a way to beat the Tide. Oklahoma. Their main problem is at quarterback but they have Adrian Peterson and he may be the Heisman Trophy winner if he stays healthy. They have eight starters back on defense and a cupcake schedule. West Virginia. This is the best opportunity the Mountaineers have ever had to win the National Championship. They have it all, a great coach, talent, momentum from last year's bowl game and a schedule that is perfectly suited for them. The Big East is down this year and WV figures to cruise through it except for ONE game...at Louisville. If they can win that one, they will be in Glendale for the final bowl game. Ohio State. I love Jim Tressel. He is an incredible coach and an honorable man. I had the privilege of being on the dais with him a couple of years ago when both of us spoke to a school district. I would hate to have to coach against him, though! The Bucks are loaded. Troy Smith, Ted Ginn and eight starters back on offense. He will have to replace his entire back seven on defense and survive Texas on the road but I believe he will do that just fine. There are some sleeper teams that could make some headlines this year...Cal, Tennessee, Washington, Boston College, Utah, LSU, Florida, Iowa, TCU and one or two MAC teams like Northern Illinois and Toledo, but the final game will come down to two of the four teams I mentioned barring a major injury... I am predicting West Virginia and Ohio State in the BCS Championship game with the Buckeyes winning 34-19. You read about it here first.
