John 3:16 - A Cat Parable, And Other Tidbits

By Frederick Smith

A Cat Parable

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

There were a lot of strays in my neighborhood, so I decided to take a few in. Training them for the litter box was not hard, and I knew full well the tendencies of cats good and bad. However, I still felt the need to get them small litter boxes and decided not to change their litter so very often.

Not surprisingly, the cats started to poop beside the box from time to time. A very annoying and unsanitary situation, to say the least, and not something one looks forward to cleaning! The box alone is bad enough, even without the extra, mushy, smelly, surprises left lying about.

So, I decided to rectify the situation. I threw the cats outside and then went around the neighborhood and shot all of the cats, every single feline I could find, save two. I let those two reproduce for a few generations and then brought some of their descendants back into the house.

Feeling regret over my last response but still keeping the same litter-system, I figured I would cut off my own finger if the unsavory behavior continued. Sure enough, I soon had to get some ice ready and secure a ride to the ER. I hacked off my left index finger and then rushed to the hospital to have it re-attached. I was in pain for hours!

Thanks to my wisdom, love, and pseudo-sacrifice, I no longer kill the neighborhood cats when they do wrong. I've saved them from my own wrath and they should be grateful.

Tidbits

We've all heard that there are no atheists in foxholes. Many theists, most notably Christians, think that atheism is some sort of denial or suppression and that in extreme circumstances, this “natural” state returns. This is quite wrong as much evidence suggests that atheism is our natural state. This helps to explain, for example, why the vast majority of people who choose religion end up adopting the religion in their own geopolitical region, and not Christianity or any other particular faith. Religion is like language – even the most bizarre language is learned, spoken with ease, and becomes normal for the local.

In any case, it seems that the real atheists in foxholes don't much like that phrase thrown about. These Americans are dying at the moment and we should show them the respect that they deserve:

Is it time to ridicule religion? I think so, and so does this opinion columnist from Australia:

Katherine Harris, of Florida electile-dysfunction fame, said recently that God did not intend for the United States to be a "nation of secular laws". She is correct – man intended the United States to be a nation of secular laws! What pleases me about this story is that, contrary to what one might think after reading the political writings of useless-knowledge.com religious zealots, there are still sensible Republicans left. Not nearly enough, but a few:

About my personal background and life: I was born, I got some education, worked, ate, and had some kids. It seems I like to write something that was unknown to me until relatively recently...How's that for detail? ;)

Hate mail is welcome unless you are from the Army Of God. Please! It's not that I mind seeing pictures of aborted fetuses in my inbox, but once you've seen one you've pretty much seen them all...
