Aug. 30, 2006 Anyone who compares US-Israel adventurism in the Middle East, which parades as the Global War on Terrorism, with the ability of some football team to rally around one of their leading players to come from behind and win, should forget about following the Middle East and keep his nose to his boob tube and its silly football games. The difference between a football game and a series of fraudulent wars should be too obvious to need to be explained, but let me point out a few of the differences. A football game consists of two groups of millionaires that want to remain millionaires, and will do everything in their power to win the games that will keep the money flowing. If they are behind, they will try all the harder to reverse the trend, rallying around somebody who inspires them with optimism. Nobody made them take up football in the first place. In fact, football stardom is a much coveted distinction. Most of what goes by the euphemism of the “war on terror”, on the other hand, is not a game between millionaires. The “war on terror” should really be called “the effort to prevent retaliations for unjustified provocations”. This effort began, of course, when Jews, mostly from the Russian Empire and the USSR , during their century-long infiltration of land occupied by Muslim Arabs since the days of Mohammad, founded the state of Israel in 1948, in the midst of Palestine . This was the real birth of the “war on terror”. Since then, in the 58 intervening years, there has been a great deal of fighting back and forth, with Israel, aided and abetted by the US, usually coming out on top. In fact, it was Israel that brought the euphemism into vogue, so naturally “Muslim self-defense” has come to be called “terrorism”, and when the US fights “terrorism”, it is in reality fighting Israel ’s enemies. That the Muslim effort has been unsuccessful, ill-organized and erratic does not change the criminality of the original deforcement and displacement, any more than a robber is justified in robbing someone in a wheelchair. George W. Bush often talks about “facts on the ground” in Palestine-Israel, by which he is referring to the circumstance that, regardless of historical justifications or their lack, Israel is now in place on Palestinian soil. It may be felicitous for a third- or fourth-generation millionaire like Bush merely to brush aside the rights of poor people who have been wronged, but to anyone with a true sense of justice, the whole “war on terrorism” stinks. This “cut-and-run” slogan that is used to denigrate those who understand the fatuousness and folly of idea that the US must stalwartly prosecute the “war on terror” suggests that everyone agreed with Bush at the outset, and now many are giving up prematurely. But I knew Bush was an arrant liar even before the invasion of Iraq began. Why should I feel loyalty to a yes-man for the Israel lobby, a man who is willing to invent lies to justify killing perhaps 200,000 people needlessly? Shall I be on his team also if and when he invades Iran , using the same old fraudulent pretexts that he used in the case of Iraq . He acts as if he thinks Americans are stupid, and it looks as if he’s probably right. Let’s hope that they don’t get their comeuppance one day. Comparing that with some ridiculous football game is beneath contempt. ------------ About the author Thomas Keyes: I have written two books: A SOJOURN IN ASIA (non-fiction) and A TALE OF UNG (fiction), neither published so far.
