Secular Humanism: A Social Scourge??

By John L. Waters
Aug. 29, 2006

Is secular humanism a social scourge? Yes, in a way, it is. The way it is presented today, secular humanism is a social scourge. Read this article with care and you will get the point.

The idea that speech and writing (wherein the verbalizer is trying to make no mistake in reasoning) is at the forefront of human evolution and brain use is implied in many humanist speeches and essays. For example, read through this article on secular humanism.

Furthermore, when reference is made to "psychotic poets" in the secular humanist document "Eleven Chapters of Life," no specific mention is made to King David and William Butler Yeats or to any other aspiring messianic poet-prophet, but we can infer from his/her text that t411sh was referring to these poets as "psychotics" since they belonged to the Judeo-Christian tradition and they sometimes wrote about the eventual coming of or return of the Christian Messiah. Moreover, the poets' various messianic writings were not logical arguments. This is why a fanatic for reasoned argumentation such as t411sh or some other fanatical secular humanist might dismiss these poets as "irrational" or "psychotic."

Reasoned arguments are often relied upon to convince a skeptical person that a certain idea, thing, or person is truly worthy. The adept reasoner is a marketer, a promoter, and a salesperson for logical argument or for some other goods. A skeptic won't buy his/her promoted ideas unless the marketer proves the worth of his/her product. In light of this, we expect the secular humanist t411sh to reason well with us and convince us that King David and William Butler Yeats were in fact "psychotics." We find no such proof given in the "Eleven Chapters of Life," however.

In view of the preceding, secular humanists should contact t411sh and Fred Smith requesting them to remove from "The Eleven Chapters of Life" all the claims that he/she doesn't prove. After all, the claim is made by secular humanists that they aspire to be reasonable and consistent and not fallacious and hypocritical, and this is why thinking people can't take secular humanism seriously when a secular humanist document is hypocritical. As it exists right now, the document is a liability to the secular humanist cause. This is why t411sh and Fred Smith need to edit "The Eleven Chapters of Life" so that the document backs up its claims, or else they need to delete the claims in that document that remain unproven.

Even if Fred Smith and t411sh removed the hypocrisy from their document, we still should be concerned because "Chapter XI New Humanity" in "The Eleven Chapters of Life" promotes the idea of using technology to improve humanity in accord with the present secular humanist agenda. So what would these zealots do with the human creative and sometimes quirky tendency to forsake logical thinking and use other means of cognition and communication? Would these transhumanist technophiles genetically engineer out of existence the quirky personality trait that the eminent European psychologist Hans Jurgen Eysenck termed "psychoticism"? In his book Genius: The natural history of creativity Dr. Eysenck claimed that this trait is found both in chronic schizophrenics and in creative geniuses. If Eysenck's claim is valid, genetic engineers and other fanatical technophiles might eliminate what they identify as the genetic predisposition for psychoticism, that is to say schizophrenia. Since high psychoticism is present both in quirky geniuses and in quirky schizophrenics, removing the gene for psychoticism would gravely damage humanity by culling out the creative genius lines. Humans would be turned back into ape-imitators.

The first step in the transhumanism agenda is to determine the full human cognitive spectrum and potential. Trying to "improve" humanity before having a clear and verifiable theory of the full human potential is dangerously naive.

I allow for human inconsistency and genius. In fact I even champion human eccentricity and I toot loudly on my literary horn the names of the following recognized geniuses or very inventive persons who sometimes talked with God or was talked to by God or otherwise was considered an unusually eccentric character. To wit: Isaac Newton, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and John Nash. The claim is true as you can verify if you study these extraordinary men and their quirks.

Secular humanism doesn't need to be a social scourge. If secular humanists really practice what they preach and cease to be hypocritical, then secular humanism won't necessarily be a social scourge. After the issue of hypocrisy, the next issue is that the dreaming imagining mind is not logical and even secular humanists themselves do sometimes imagine and dream. Creative geniuses dream a lot and they mix their dreams up with reality. This florid confusion of imagination with reality is H.J. Eysenck's "psychoticism" trait in action. In relatively sterile contrast, the post that secular humanists chain themselves and others to, the insistence on always being reasonable and always being consistent, and never being quirky is a serious mistake in their agenda and this flaw presently makes secular humanism a social scourge.

Please note that John Waters is not a Luddite or a neo-Amish no matter how many times the U-K columnist and wannabe humorist Fred Smith has repeatedly tried to pin that label on John Waters. Neither is this article an attack on science, technology, or logic. This article is an attack on hypocritical thinking, shallow thinking, misplaced zeal, and a "The Eleven Chapters of Life" document that is ill-humored, dangerously negative, hypocritical and therefore needs extensive revision.
