Behold Fred Smith, The Verbal Stunt Man And Proofless Pretzelitizer

By John L. Waters
Aug. 26, 2006

In his recent useless-knowledge articles verbal "good guys versus bad guys" Fred Smith has kept trying to convince the reader that he is a "good guy" and that John Waters is a "bad guy." One way Fred plies his simplistic caricature trade is to twist and bend the meaning of words such as "transhumanism." Fred Smith is trying to be a proselytizer for secular humanism but instead of doing that, in his last few articles Fred is being a verbal pretzelitizer. For example, Fred cannily (or should I say con-nily?) twists and bends the meaning of the central topic as he writes, "Transhumanism.... began eons ago with farming, the domestication of animals and plants and the first cities." In this sentence Fred’s doing an Orwellian 1984 grand word distortion of the meaning of the word "transhumanism" given on the website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism which states,

"Transhumanism (sometimes abbreviated >H or H+) is an international intellectual and cultural movement supporting the use of new sciences and technologies to enhance human cognitive and physical abilities and ameliorate what it regards as undesirable and unnecessary aspects of the human condition, such as disease and aging. Transhumanist thinkers study the possibilities and consequences of developing and using human enhancement techniques and other emerging technologies for these purposes. Possible dangers, as well as benefits, of powerful new technologies that might radically change the conditions of human life are also of concern to the transhumanist movement."

That definition isn't describing farming, domestication, or achitecture.

Witness the verbal caricaturing word-pretzelitizing work of the prolific U-K columnist Fred Smith. The quote from Wikipedia definitely casts doubt on the veracity of Fred's claim about when transhumanism began.

There are more twists, turns, and verbal conniptions as Fred really tries to con the reader into accepting his claim that "John is neo-Amish" and his claim that that "John is using useless-knowledge to vent his fears and frustrations with science." Verbal Stunt Man Fred fails to back up these two claims.

If Fred Smith is truly interested in basic science, he should follow the eminent physicist Richard Feynman, who says,

"To make progress in understanding we must remain modest and allow that we do not know. Nothing is certain or proved beyond all doubt." To check this out, go to the website "Richard Feynman on Science and Religion." Located at

http://www.phys.washington.edu/users/vladi/phys216/Feynman_on_religion_2_edited.rtf

Following science's paradigm of humility and doubt, Fred ought not be making unwarranted claims about John Waters or about sci-technology. But Fred sticks to his con game. Fred doesn’t appear to be a scientist at heart.

To continue his con-artistry, Fred Smith keeps calling John Waters names, and making unwarranted claims about John. The fact is that John Waters is not ignorant of science. John's official college transcript shows that in college he studied physics, chemistry, biology, botany, geology, and other "hard" sciences. John also took 75 semester units in mathematics and he excelled in his studies. John then advanced from these established sciences to study individual persons including himself and begin working in a new branch of science. During this work John often doubts his ideas and when he can he tests them. This is the way science progresses.

Since May of 2005, at the invitation of the editor, John Waters has been writing for Useless Knowledge Magazine. John is aware that his writing can be improved. Evidence that this is true is forthcoming by reviewing John's many edited papers. John visits student editors regularly in his efforts to make his writing clear. John can prove this claim but Fred can’t prove his claims that John is a "neo-Amish" or that John's research is delusional. In fact this particular article has been edited seven times.

Even though for thousands of years yogis have lived and taught, Fred Smith wants you to believe that John Waters' research on unitive intelligence is a "delusion." The reason why Fred makes such a claim simply might be that Fred himself has never practiced yoga. Fred also has never examined John's work. People tend to dismiss or discount a subject that they have no personal experience with. Fred's claim about John's work being a "delusion" is just a verbal con-artist's bag of hot air.

If you study the preceding quote (paragraph 2 above) from Wikipedia on "transhumanism," and if you personally review John, you will see that John's work fits right into the transhumanist agenda, because John's work pertains to enabling a person to sense and achieve in ways previously not possible, as well as integrating all the cognitive processes in a way which present schools do not teach.

The way to define and advance human cognition is to question, doubt, and test. Get new ideas. Test them. Keep a record of results. Find more people who want to be tested. Examine these persons individually. Study their individual responses. Continue this process. This is basic science on cognition. If you do not work a certain talent over the years your brain gradually shuts that talent down.

Here's some parting advice: Let's stop the ad hominems and focus on the important points. And let's keep our words from getting all bent out of shape. Thumbs up for good English!

You, too, can help end verbal pretzelization. Become a better writer!
