A Strange Week

By Meri Ulrich
Aug. 25, 2006

For every gain there is a loss it seems. I have had a week that proves this to be a pretty accurate statement.

From Monday to Tuesday evening I waited by my phone while my daughter-in-law went through a 23 hour labor. She has many medical problems and this was considered a VERY high risk pregnancy. She has Factor Five (her blood is too thick and she throws blood clots which can be fatal), she developed gestational diabetes and there was a risk with that and it took her almost three years to get pregnant and required surgery in order for it to happen.

When it finally did, our family began a nine month vigil of worry and fear. We were never sure if she or the baby would be alright and that was difficult.

Finally, at 8 P.M., Tuesday night we rejoiced in our brand new baby girl and she is beautiful.

On Wednesday my husband began to complain that his left arm felt funny and he worried that he was having a heart attack. I checked for all of the known symptoms and gave him an aspirin. He wasn't describing anything that qualified as a heart problem but he was describing something that he had experienced five years ago...a Transient Ischemic Attack or Mini Stroke.

I called his doctor and he felt that we could wait for an exam at his scheduled visit this coming Monday but that I should keep a close eye on him. I have been doing that and really annoying him a lot by asking him how he feels every two minutes! Thank God he is a sweet man and that his current illness hasn't made him combative. He just answers me as best he can and cooperates.

Anyway, this has been a week of a great gain and a possible set back so I am thanking the powers that be for the good part and asking Him to keep my husband from suffering the bad part.

During this entire process I have also been receiving a steady stream of vicious PM's from Mr. Gould which refer to my husband in horribly offensive ways and to myself as well. He threw in Pat Hurley for good measure (as he always does) so no one has gone unscathed by Mr. Gould. Thankfully, our Editor is a class act and has helped me a lot. with this problem. I want to thank him publicly for his kindness. The PM's have now stopped.

Gains...losses, all a part of life but not always easy to accept or understand.

As long as there are beautiful new babies and kind people like Matt I will endure (and yes, this one was all about me for those who enjoy emailing me to point that out).

Thank you, Cassidy Jean

Thank you, Mr Editor.

You both made the gains greater than the losses.
