Aug. 24, 2006 The Bible is considered by many to be the infallible, literal Word of God. If that is true then it must be assumed that God would choose to share his infinite wisdom with the world and save us all a lot of grief. In fact, just a simple, short reading of any of the passages of scripture reveals a surprising lack of useful and actual knowledge about the real world. If God is omniscient, why didn't he tell us about the scientific and technological ideas that helped shape our modern world? To that end, then, here is a brief list of the things that are not mentioned in the Bible: Nuclear physics, astrophysics, modern medicine, microwave ovens, automobiles, spacecraft, gravitational motion, plate tectonics, inoculations and vaccines, telephones, television, central heating, air conditioners, trains, airplanes, germ theory, interstate highways, hydroelectric dams, electricity, washing machines, clothes dryers, power tools, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Mars, electromagnetism, freight liners, oceanography, meteorology, molecules, atoms, the Periodic Table of Elements, quantum mechanics, rocket science, open heart surgery, orthopedic surgery, preventive medicine, penicillin, the Theory of Relativity, natural selection, ecology, organic evolution, rain forests, glaciers, asteroids, comets, galaxies, chocolate, vitamins, telescopes and satellites. Additionally the following animals must have been on Noah's ark but they are not mentioned by name anywhere in the Bible: Giraffes, elephants, reindeer, polar bears, penguins, orcas, marine mammals of any kind including whales and seals. Okay, whales and seals didn't need to be on the ark but they still aren't mentioned anywhere. Some people will say that it wasn't necessary for God to mention all these things in his Word because he is the ultimate source of inspiration for the science and technology that gave us many of these things. However, if he was the one who inspired these things to come into existence, why do atheists benefit from them? Also, why did he take so long to give us certain technologies that could have saved millions of lives over thousands of years of civilization? Can you imagine the difference it would have made to the citizens of Western Europe if vaccines had been invented in the 12th century? What about the Egyptians? They could have built their monuments in a fraction of the time it normally took if they would have had access to modern heavy equipment and power tools. The same is true of the Temple of Solomon and King David's palace as well as his capital city of Jerusalem. If the Wise Men would have had telescopes, star charts and satellites they would have know exactly what the light over Bethlehem was that night and it may have told them more than they ever thought possible about the universe. A graphic example of the knowledge missing from the Book of Books are the passages in the Book of Genesis that claim that people used to live for hundreds of years. It that's true, modern archaeologists should have found their remains by now. Modern technology allows scientists to tell exactly how old a human or animal was at the time of their death by examining bone material. So far they've never found a human bone that revealed anyone as old as the Bible claims they were. In fact, many people barely survived to adulthood. The average life expectancy in many localities was less than 40 years. If you are over the age of 50 you should thank a scientist because it is science and modern medical technology that has given us the ability to live to be 70, 80, 90 or even 100 years old. These ages were unheard of just 200 years ago despite what the Bible says. So the question remains. If the Bible is the infallible, literal Word of God, why is there so much missing information? Doesn't God care about us enough to spare us thousands of years of grief and millions of lives lost to warfare and disease? Why would he withhold information vital to the continued existence of all of humanity? Well, the answer really has only two possible options. He's either impotent and therefore not God because God is supposed to be omnipotent or he doesn't care and therefore cannot be God either because God is Love.
