Aug. 22, 2006 Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the global warming propagandists were claiming that the Earth was warming and that it was all caused by eeeevvvillll corporations and human beings' desire to drive SUVs rather than pedal bicycles to work in the rain. Lookee here, y'all, said Al Gore. ("Lookee here, y'all" is what a redneck says before doing something really stupid.) I have real, honest-to-gosh videos of some glaciers melting. Well, indeed he did. But it turns out that the glaciers have been melting since at least 1920, a good long time before the invention of SUVs and before the marked burgeoning of human activity and human populations. The study was done by a Danish university and will be released in the near future. Those pesky scientists, rather than just making videos of melting glaciers, have actually studied them on Greenland's Disko Island. (This is where John Travolta made the movie "Saturday Night Fever," by the way. Disko dancing was invented there.) Lo and behold, the glaciers have been shrinking since at least 1920. Perhaps the Danes were interested in Greenland because of the reports that Greenland was once actually green and that the Vikings had grown grapes and other crops there hundreds of years ago. In other words, Greenland was a lot warmer centuries ago before the Industrial Age, before coal-fired power plants, before petroleum wells and refineries and gasoline and long before SUVs were ever conceived. The Earth has been cooling and warming all on its own without any human influence for eons. The anthropocentric global warming fanatic who haunts these pages, who shall remain nameless, when confronted with the clear scientific evidence that we simply don't have enough data to predict climate hundreds of years in the future, makes the claim that we certainly can because weather scientists can predict hurricanes so accurately. Ah, yes. Now that claim has gone the way of the wind, as it were. Using the Red Queen approach to trials, verdict first and trial later, the Katrina disaster gave the global warming freaks another catastrophe to hang their anti-industrial hat on. Lookee here, y'all, they said, preparing to make fools of themselves. They claimed that increased hurricanes were caused by global warming which was, of course, caused by western civilization. They predicted that this year's hurricane season would be bad, too, because human beings were warming up the oceans. (I note that we have enough trouble keeping our bath water sufficiently warm until very recent human history. The idea that we were heating up the ocean was preposterous on its face.) But now there is a bit of a problem for them. The oceans are now colder, the current hurricane season has seen exactly ZERO hurricanes, and the number of tropical storms is way below average. The National Weather Service is now, in the spirit of predicting the past, saying that we will only have 12 hurricanes by December. Nota bene: THE OCEANS HAVE COOLED OFF. Nota multo bene: The global warming freaks will now claim that a cooling of the ocean is caused by global warming. I told you, they have reached their verdict first and will never change it no matter what evidence is introduced at the trial. You can count on it. Whether we have flood or drought, heat waves or cold spells, too much snow or too little snow, too much sun or too little sun, too many clouds or too few clouds, it will all be the fault of General Motors and Ford. I doubt they will blame it on Toyota or Honda. That wouldn't be politically correct. (They're Asian, you know, and the leftists wouldn't want to appear racist.) ------------ About the author Brooks A. Mick: Physician, still practicing medicine but retired from the US Army.
