The Media Versus The Internet

There are some valid points made in the above article but they have to acknowledge that the coverage by Cable News Shows have proven that they experience a huge spike in their ratings whenever they do cover an interesting case that appeals in some way to the public's need for information.

In the Ramsey case, we all remember the constant (and current) video of that beautiful little child prancing around in her pageant finery and how she died such a dreadful death in her own home. It was ugly then and it's ugly now ten years later. We are interested so we watch the coverage. We also need closure.

Was there a rush to judgment in the pronouncements that Karr is her killer? Yes, I believe that there was and that the public wanted the story to be true. I have my doubts because from what I have heard some of his comments do not match the facts and evidence in the case. It will take a lot more to convince me that he is responsible for the child's death.

As for the Holloway case, that too holds the interest of much of the public as has been evidenced by the much higher ratings on Greta Van Susteren and Rita Cosby's shows whenever they concentrated on that case. The emails that these shows received spiked to outrageous numbers and the public cried for more. It is also an unsolved case and another family lost a child where there has been no solution. It also holds the public's interest because of the cast of characters involved. Policemen who are related to suspects and spokespeople who are related to witnesses and suspects...it's a virtual bag of nepotistic folly and it's interesting and fascinating.

Of course, the Peterson case and the O.J. Simpson case held out attention because we saw two obviously bad guys being paraded in front of us and only one went to prison. The other is still free as a bird and I suppose, STILL looking for the killer of his ex-wife!!

It's human nature to stop at a train wreck and these cases are true train wrecks so we must stop and rubber-neck. The cable media allows us to do that from the comfort of our homes.

The Internet allows us to not only read about the cases and the various opinions about them but to speak about them ourselves if we so choose. They both have a value and a purpose and I don't see them as being at odds with each other. Each have a function that satisfies the needs of the rubber-neckers.

I don't expect this type of prolonged and endless coverage to end anytime soon and honestly...I wouldn't want it to. We can always turn off the television or our computer if we don't want to participate. I prefer to have the option of watching, reading, writing or ignoring.

So continue on Fox, MSNBC, CNN, Useless Knowledge and every other media and Internet outlet. You will always have your fans and your followers.
