How To Reduce Your Waistline

By Thomas Keyes
Aug. 14, 2005

I was pleased yesterday morning when, not having measured my waist for perhaps 5 months, I found that I had lost 2 inches. I was already slim enough, but now I’m just a little slimmer. I went from 30 inches to 28 inches.

This did not come about spontaneously. I’ve been on a program of exercise for about one year. In all, I have been doing eight exercises, three of which pertain to my midriff, and those are the ones that are showing some results.

Each morning, before I do anything else, I do 150 sit-ups, 250 toe-touches and ten 70-second stomach abs. I started sit-ups at 10 a day, and increased the count one per day, so it took me nearly 5 months to reach 150. I probably could have done the toe-touches all along, but I never did any, till last August. The stomach abs I increased from 20 to 70 seconds over a couple of months. These three exercises take half an hour. I do five other exercises at mid-day, for another half-hour.

Still, as late as March, there was no measurable improvement, so I stopped measuring myself. Just recently, in fact, I was even debating with myself about just dropping the whole thing as a waste of effort. So I was gratified that finally I am seeing results. Now I have redoubled enthusiasm about really pouring it on. I’ll increase it gradually though, so that I won’t feel aggrieved by assigning myself too much work.

As for food, I just barely eat. I hardly ever sit down to a full meal. I just eat three or four snacks a day. When I was young, I used to eat three big meals a day, and snacks too, but I was always overweight, usually around 220 pounds, sometimes even more. Now I stay between 155 and 165, which is slim for 5’-11”, but that’s the way I like it.

In my opinion, it’s a fallacy to look upon eating as fun, entertainment or art. Still, if you can eat all the delicacies and treats you like, without gaining weight, as come people can, more power to you. But for me, the best philosophy is to look upon eating as a necessary nuisance, begrudging myself every bite.

Anyway, at my age, 69, I feel that shaping up a bit will help me squeeze out a couple extra years. Maybe and maybe not, who knows? Exercising won’t do any harm, in any case.

So far, though, I have felt no increment in personal energy. I always did feel pretty good, and I cannot honestly say that I feel more vim, pep or vigor at least for the time being,

Let me interject that, of course, this regimen is accompanied by total abstinence from alcoholic beverages, tobacco and controlled substances. I do allow myself plenty of sleep, nine hours a day or so, because that’s my favorite pastime.
