Aug. 13, 2006 The clash of cultures generates much heat but little light. On a small scale, witness the recent discordant U-K exchanges between Frederick Smith and John Waters. Both of these persons have spent time in addressing this issue, but not directly. Both sides perceive the other as a threat, a vilifier, and an evil force to be defeated. In reality neither side has actually met and gotten to know each other as a human being. Instead verbal abstractions and arguments have been punched back and forth like a volleyball across the net. On a grander scale, mathematical science and technology give modern humanity increasing physical powers. These powers in themselves aren't good or evil. They simply are readily available to persons, organizations, and governments. How shall these immense powers be used? If humans don't become more intelligent, the sci-tech powers will be used more destructively than creatively and peacemaking and peacekeeping will not be supported by churches and other prominent social groups. Modern discords are likely to escalate and become more violent. The world definitely needs research on peacemaking and peacekeeping, in each person, between persons, and between social groups. When verbal arguments make both parties attack the other party more vigorously, destructive effort is escalated by both sides against the other side. The work of one side gets undone by the other side. Spectators may enjoy watching the fight, but many precious resources are consumed in destructive actions. In actual wars, of course, this waste is amplified by a factor of millions or even billions. Whole landscapes are devastated and whole nations are compromised. Peacemakers establish a common ground and build on that. They keep the peace by understanding the peace process. When there is a disagreement, both sides come to a clear understanding. On each side there is learning and growth. Peace is a radically different social paradigm. To see how different the peace paradigm is, consider the following. Today the news tends to report controversies and the media tends to promote exciting stories of victorious fighters. Many people enjoy watching a battle from their safe and cushy theater seats. Modern society as a rule rewards victorious fighters and becoming wealthy usually requires both a strategy and a struggle. In reality, though, the wealth of existence might be available to everyone. But that's a whole new social paradigm, and a new way of culturing children. Healthy robust children learn to think, act, and feel the way their peers and elders think, act, and feel. That makes a culture. When there's enough for everyone, and the basic rule is make sure the other person is okay, there is a cultured spirit of good feelings and a constructive cooperative sense in the brain and in the class. There isn't oppression in the brain and no part of the brain atrophies from lack of stimulation and use. But in a culture of oppression, intimidation, and extremes of privilege versus poverty, this new paradigm gets no fair test. Today's poverty-ridden cultures remain archaic and certain human brain activity gets suppressed. For example, children are taught to draw and write using one hand only. One integrated brain can help other brains integrate. Integration isn't ever 100% finished. Peacemaking and peacekeeping is an ongoing process in children and adults. Today, however, much education is archaic, and critical pedagogy is a nascent cultural movement which will help create the new culture of non-oppressed children and adults. Critical pedagogy works to expose oppression in teachers and in other authorities who try to teach. One example of oppressive teaching is where a writer or a teacher tries to assert that one skill or faculty, such as reasoning or playing the violin, is more important than another skill or faculty, such as imagination or playing the flute. In reality the youthful brain as a whole orchestra and the diverse faculties blend and flow together. The integrated teacher then encourages each person to integrate his or her many faculties and to not feel constrained or intimidated. Intimidation is counter-productive and often escalates a conflict. This paradigm of peace encourages each student to access every other student and try out every piece of equipment as the student demonstrates gentleness and respect. The daily lesson is this stimulation and integration of all the native faculties. But no school yet teaches this integration, and certain native faculties are not recognized, respected, and understood by the modern cultures of conquest; the master fighters and conquerors of past ages. Today's greatest challenge is de-escalating the present conflicts and defining the new social paradigm. Present humanity is oriented to intimidation, exclusion, battle, and conquest. The rapid waste of resources has to be reversed and schools have to change for the better. Long suppressed native talents have to be brought back and integrated with modern sci-tech talent and knowledge. But sci-tech knowledge is not just the opinion of one or more scientists, educators, or writers. To long endure, modern humanity has to become more creatively intelligent by integrating all the brain's faculties and maximizing the brain's constructive power. ------------ About the author: sixty-six years young, and vigorous in mind, body, emotions, and spirit, John L. Waters is an independent researcher on self-healing, integration, creativity, and unity. To help demonstrate the effectiveness of his research, John has created thousands of drawings, paintings, instrumental music pieces, songs, prose pieces, poems, and other inventions. John has used his research to help persons remove a mental block and solve a problem. John also gives personal presentations which illustrate his research results. Each one of these works demonstrates the effectiveness of John's research.
