Aug. 13, 2006 On the “Religion” page of the July 23rd edition of the Stars and Stripes the article: “New program proves faith a tough topic for television” by Richard N. Ostling of the AP. I don’t believe you can get more strange than this article on any “Religion” page with the word “faith” in the title. The article is a primer [an advertisement if you will] for a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) show entitled: Bill Moyers on Faith and Reason”. I have never seen this program (not having PBS in Kuwait) but it is a PBS program about religion and the article says nothing about using a taxpayer-funded source for promoting religious thought as any type of “separation of church/state” issue. Amazingly, it is not difficult to discover why. Firstly, probably fewer people watch this program than watch Chris Matthews’ “Hardball”. Secondly, the show is actually nothing more than another in a series of atheistic attempts to slander “religion” and the Christian religion in particular. “Faith and Reason” can be nothing of the sort. As I do not much read the atheists in this forum because they all read similar in their bitterness toward all things religious, I can only imagine “Faith and Reason is largely devoted to the destruction of both faith and reason based on the so-called “cast” of the program. Quoting the article: “The cast included Salman Rusdie, the chosen representative of Islam, a self-described “hard-line atheist” who believes religions and moralities are never revelations but mere creations of human imagination.” “Rutgers philosopher Colin McGinn, another dedicated atheist who once told the BBC “it’s a bad idea to believe in God.” Canada’s Margaret Atwood, an agnostic whose “Handmaid’s Tale” depicts the danger of a future America ruled by manic Theocrats.” “David Grossman, the sort of Jew who believes Israel perennially favors “the way to violence.” “Mary Gordon, the type of Roman Catholic who dislikes her church, rejects dogma and thinks “it’s very hard to believe that there is a personal God looking out for us.” “Richard Rodriguez, writer and PBS essayist, whose Catholic identity is complicated by his gay identity.” “Britain’s Jeanette Winterson, a lesbian who forsook her extremely rigid Pentecostal home at the age of 16.” (End Quote) Seven people with the sole similar distinction that they abhor God and faith speaking of “Faith and Reason”. What is wrong with that picture? Quote: “Moyers said his selected authors believe “fundamentalism can lead to 9/11.” Salman Rusdie – Although I might agree Islam is a creation of murderous radicals with no true revelation, his being an atheist makes only makes him an “expert” in non-faith. Colin McGinn – Being another “dedicated” atheist isn’t any more trustworthy than Rusdie when discussing faith with any reason. Margaret Atwood – Probably hasn’t thought much about an America ruled by “manic” atheists like McGinn and Rushdie. David Grossman – Apparently is ignoring his roots in favor of the worldly fame inherent in trashing his own race. Mary Gordon – is smart in “rejecting dogma”. There is a lot to reject about Catholicism as was shown so long ago by a fellow named Martin Luther (not an atheist). Her being stuck in a works-based religion is the only thing that makes it “very hard to believe” in a personal God. Richard Rodriguez – has two meaningless world-linked identities. It is no wonder he is confused. Jeanette Winterson – ran away from home at 16 and failed her parents miserably, but at least she got a spot on Moyers’ show. I believe it is reasonable to assume none of these seven individuals understand anything about true faith. It is also reasonable for me to believe none of these seven people have anything intelligent to add to the eternality of the spirit of man. They are dead in their own ‘beliefs” and a show based in equalizing and then bashing all forms of “fundamentalism” is both unreasonable and untruthful. But then, atheists will be who they will be; unfaithful and without reason. ------------ About the Author: Michael John McCrae has contributed over 500 articles to Useless-Knowledge.com.
