The Mosquito And The Flea: John Waters And Tracey Stevens [And Some Quotes]

By Frederick Smith
Aug. 11, 2006

The Mosquito

John Waters continues to buzz around the issues. Fred doesn't believe everyone should share his views. Indeed, it is quite the opposite. The context is abortion, and if we all have a different sense of the universe or God, then choice is that “open” answer which allows us all to commune or come to our own conclusions, be it based on old style religion, new-age mysticism or rational approaches. Having said, of course Fred can lay out his views on the matter rather specifically and consistently in order to defend his personal views.

Fred also appreciates consistency. Fred and David have pointed out quite thoroughly that John's view of abortion and stem cell research are inconsistent. Fred knows that John is smart enough to remove the blinders from his eyes if he so chooses. If you follow John's string of articles carefully, he has already begun. Perhaps John realizes that repeating shallow pro-life propaganda is a dead-end road leading to hypocrisy and paradox. Perhaps then this process has had some value after all.

Fred won't apologize for mocking the “deaths” of billions of fertilized eggs (and will likely do it again), and John won't apologize for calling scientists evil and humanists a modern scourge. In any case, it makes no difference - while Fred finds fault with John's reasoning, John has stated (I'm almost sorta mostly kinda sure) that he isn't against stem cell research or abortion per se. If John supports the political pro-choice position, then about this particular topic, Fred doesn't have any issues with him - he is free to believe what he wants for whatever reason he wants. John's neo-Amish science-sentiment is a different matter and will be the topic of future articles.

The Flea

Yet again, Tracey wasn't satisfied with my responses on the UK forum, so he used our discussion to hop to the main UK page with an article to spread written irritation there. The forum has a less professional demeanor and was created to tone down the rebuttal articles on the main page. There are still rebuttal articles here and there always will be (I write them myself), however, there was a time when every other article was a rebuttal. In that sense, the forum has been successful. In any case, this debate began over email months ago and has now extended here. Anyone interested in this debate can read all about it here and participate. I've already responded there and will likely continue to respond there.

Well, that's not quite 400 words - time for some more quotes:

“Moral crusade: Public activity undertaken by middle-aged men who are cheating on their wives or diddling little boys. Moral crusades are particularly popular among those seeking power for their own personal pleasure, politicians who can't think of anything useful to do with their mandates, and religious professionals suffering from a personal inability to communicate with their god.” -- John Ralston Saul

"Natural" is a very dangerous word to use about sexuality ... Our society's notions of normality are completely fake and meta-trendy, since they rely on the changing standards of superstition, religion, Christianity and gender bias to define themselves. Americans, in particular, exhibit very childish reactions to sexual practices that are new to them, much like little kids who are offered a vegetable they haven't seen before: "That's disgusting!" "But darling, you haven't even tried it!" "I don't care, I hate it, I hate it!" -- Susie Bright

“When authorities warn you of the sinfulness of sex, there is an important lesson to be learned. Do not have sex with the authorities.” -- Matt Groening

"I honestly don't understand the big fuss made over nudity and sex in films. It's silly. On TV, the children can watch people murdering each other, which is a very unnatural thing, but they can't watch two people in the very natural process of making love. Now, really, that doesn't make any sense, does it?" -- Sharon Tate

“The Christian view that all intercourse outside marriage is immoral was, as we see in the above passages from St. Paul, based upon the view that all sexual intercourse, even within marriage, is regrettable. A view of this sort, which goes against biological facts, can only be regarded by sane people as a morbid aberration. The fact that it is embedded in Christian ethics has made Christianity throughout its whole history a force tending towards mental disorders and unwholesome views of life.” ~ Bertrand Russell

Sex without love is merely healthy exercise. ~ Robert A. Heinlein

Last, and most certainly least:

[Planned Parenthood] is teaching kids to fornicate, teaching people to have adultery, every kind of bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism – everything that the Bible condemns. ~ Pat Robertson, Christian Coalition

About the author Frederick Smith: I enjoy writing about the positive virtues of humanism - humanists are the good guys.

I now have a blog that I will start to increasingly maintain and update. Here is the link:

About my personal background and life: I was born, I got some education, worked, ate, and had some kids. It seems I like to write something that was unknown to me until relatively recently...How's that for detail? ;)

Hate mail is welcome unless you are from the Army Of God. Please! It's not that I mind seeing pictures of aborted fetuses in my inbox, but once you've seen one you've pretty much seen them all...
