Aug. 11, 2006 Another day, another week, another month, another year go by without airliners crashing or buildings exploding. With so many crazed Muslim fanatics in the world who want to attack the USA, one wonders why it hasn't happened. Those Muslim terrorists will pretend it is because they haven't wanted to attack the USA in the past 5 years, but I don't believe it. As a first approximation of the truth, I tend to believe the exact opposite of what Muslim terrorists say. Just to confuse us, they do tell the truth on rare occasions. It is much like the ACLU taking on the occasional case where they stand up for conservative freedoms. They just want to keep us confused about their real purposes. The ACLU, come to think of it, practices legal terrorism. Their goal is to destroy the lives of innocent women and children and other Americans through the destruction of our legal system. They cleverly camouflage themselves, however, as ordinary lawyers. They are unlawful combatants in the court system. But I digress. I think the terrorists have wanted to attack the USA but have had their plots foiled by the NSA's spying on their phone conversations, by the monitoring of their banking transactions, by the expansion of the purview of the FBI and other agencies, and by the improved cooperation between the FBI and the CIA and other agencies allowed by the Patriot Act, among other things. The Clinton-Gorelick "wall" erected between the investigations of criminal and terrorist activities has been torn down, mostly, by the Bush Administration. That's good. It isn't needed any longer to protect Clinton's shady actions from investigation. Without that "wall," we might have foiled 9/11 before it happened. Can any of this be proved? I don't think so. One makes one's best estimate in times like this. So now we have some folks, inadvertently perhaps, bent on suicide, saying we should repeal the Patriot Act, stop spying on terrorists, and extend legal protections to terrorists just as though they were decent citizens or common criminals. It is time to recognize that this amounts to lying down and putting your neck on the chopping block and, before so doing, you sharpen the executioner's axe for him. Let's get serious about terrorism. Whether you understand it or not makes no difference. They want to kill you or enslave you or convert you to Islam. They don't care if Israel pulls out of Gaza--they will pretend Israel hasn't pulled out and continue to kill Israelis. It doesn't matter if Israel pulls out of Lebanon--they will pretend Israel is there and they will entice Israel to return by rocketing Israel. It wouldn't matter if we pulled out of Iraq--they would still be trying to kill Americans and other innocent women and children.
