Why do I preface this article with that statement?

Answer: Because I have a complaint about the generation of my parents.

I have heard and read recently about how in the past parents would go out and throw a ball with their children. That my generation is not doing this with our children. I have a different perspective on this.

My generation was the generation after the sexual revolution. This generation was the "latch key kids" of the 1980's. The parents of my generation were too busy with careers and current relationships to play with their kids. That my friends and I came home to empty houses and the television baby sitter.

We were not taught by our parents that it was important to throw a ball with them. My generation was gifted many shiny things to compensate for the guilt of the baby boomers for not being there. I have talked to many my own age with the same complaint. Our parents were selfish.

The divide is getting deeper between the older generation and us. The boomers need to realize that we are not going to do what they wish they had done, but rather what they did. I'm sorry, but "do as I say, not as I do," doesn't work. So either you need to shut up about our parenting, or step up as grandparents and at least try to get that right.
