Aug. 4, 2006 Last evening I had the pleasure of previewing Al Gore’s movie, "The Inconvenient Truth", (2006). It was an eye-opening and enlightening experience to say the very least. I realize that many of you may not agree about the seriousness of this dilemma, but I assure you it is real, serious, and needs immediate mitigation if we want this world to be around for future generations. Let me impart some truths; Our atmosphere is supposed to allow just enough heat to remain on the earth to give us breathable air, survivable weather conditions, and clean water. It is this delicate balance that keeps things in check and allows the human race to prosper. What has created this imbalance? Increases in worldwide populations, increases in automobile use, increased power use, and greater numbers of factories have all contributed to this imbalance. The time for change is NOW! (www.globalwarmingisreal.com, Gore, A., 2006, “The Inconvenient Truth”) Specifically, greenhouse gasses are being trapped instead of escaping from our atmosphere. Why? Because the atmosphere is becoming thicker each year as we turn a blind eye and deaf ear to changes in our ecosystem. What are the signs of this change? (Gore, A., 2006, “The Inconvenient Truth”) All of us (who have taken the time and effort) have noticed the increase in sea levels or dramatic rising and falling of our tides in coastal communities around the world. Many have witnessed the new highs and lows in temperature ranges across the globe from season to season. Several have had contact with friends, family, or even themselves been party to devastating storms, flooding, or brush fires that have wreaked havoc from east to west and north to south. Hardly anyone has been untouched in some form or fashion to the changes in our ecosystem. (www.globalwarmingisreal.com) Al Gore (2006) brings to light the fact that ice in the Arctic has been melting at fast and furious rates. Melting so fast that many times Polar Bears having to travel as far as 60 miles to find ice. Many Polar Bears are drowning in their quest. This is a sad reality and one that requires immediate action. Estimates from scientists show 6 feet or more ice will melt from the Arctic over the next 100 years or less. While this may not sound like a lot to many of you in the scheme of things it is. As our temperatures rise and habitats are overtaken by the increasing sea levels we also notice an increase in diseases and infections due to larger numbers of mosquitoes and rodents. Consider Avian Flu, Mad Cow Disease, Malaria, Hantavirus, etc., all results of overpopulation of mosquitoes and other airborne infectious bacterial strains that are largely thermophylic in nature. How can we stop this progress? America and the world need to become proactive. We need to research, develop, and fund a fast transformation from our fossil fuel consumption, overpopulation, and rampant development infringing upon wildlife habitats that further endanger our environment. We need to develop energy efficient automobiles that work from renewable and sustainable energy sources. Governments and scientists need to work in concert with humanity by helping to create jobs that will ensure a secure and affordable future for all. We need to protect our wildlife and their delicate habitats. Together we can make it happen! Please write or call your local/state congress people and/or senators and urge them to heed the warnings of scientists worldwide. Urge them to help make global warming a problem of the past. Force them to take a stand for, and with, the environment. It is all our world and it will take working with governments and communities across the globe to ensure the safety and security those future generations will not be threatened by greenhouse gasses. The time to change is NOW! The time to act is NOW!
