Paulus Van der Sloot WINS!

By Patrick Hurley
Aug. 2, 2006

The father of the main suspect in the Natalee Holloway disappearance, Paulus Van der Sloot, has won damages totalling $28,000.00 against Aruban authorities for his contention that he was falsely imprisoned for his role in an allleged crime against her.

Many of Natalee's supporters and friends will scream that Paulus used his influence to win the case. They would be wrong.

The evidence against Paulus Van der Sloot was never even CLOSE for an arrest. His rights were infringed upon. As a father who has a lot to learn about setting an exemplary example for his son, he is right up there with Darth Vader and Pete Rose. But, there was NO evidence that he broke a law. Watching him run from the shadows to his car while being videotaped by FOX news is not a crime. Refusing to allow the authorities to come on to his property to look for evidence in the case is not a crime. Helping his son with legal advice is not a crime. The perception that he is a womanizing sleaze bag is not a crime.

The injustice here is the inept police work, the inability of the Aruban authorities to JUSTIFY arresting him in the first place and the refusal of the Dutch government to reprimand or fire its incompetent and shady investigative leaders. This mockery of justice did not initiate or end with Paulus Van der Sloot; it goes back to a core of soulless individuals who categorically refused to come out of their dark holes of corruption and allow their beloved island paradise to be exposed for what it really is, a geographical wasteland of materialistic pursuit teeming with selfish trolls which pervade its nightclubs, back alleys, justice systems and police department.

If one wants to scream, "INJUSTICE!" you need not waste your time on Paulus Van der Sloot. Begin with Dave Holloway walking into the office of Dennis Jacobs, the lead detective in the police department who upon being notified that Natalee was missing responded, "How much money do you have?" Follow that track of insidious investigating and you will see that by the time they got around to arresting Paulus, this case was OVER.

You cannot have it both ways. If you were delighted that Paulus was arrested without any proof beyond hearsay that he committed a crime, you have to accept the verdict that he won today. There is a lot of scum under the log here, but let's start scraping it off when it first appeared and that was with an island nation that refuses to allow the good people who visit there have any chance against the cretins who welcome their money and flesh with open arms.

Paulus Van der Sloot belongs to the island of Aruba. There is no question about that. He fits right in. He is not my favorite person in the world by a longshot. My gut tells me that he knows what happened to Natalee and there is a better than average chance he aided in helping to cover it up. To many of us, he is the poster dad of slime.

But his arrest, in hindsight, was ill-timed and lacking in evidentiary certainty. The law is the law and it requires more than just what we have heard secondhand or what our own instincts tell us. For that he was justified in being compensated for his incarceration.
