May. 1, 2006 Let me say up front that Joran van der Sloot has not been charged with any crime against Natalee Holloway and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Having disclaimed that legal fact I would like to tell you why Joran van der Sloot is not quite so innocent of other behaviors which could lead one to believe that he just may have had something to do with Natalee's disappearance. First, we know about Joran's penchant for lying. We also know that because of that lying Joran, along with his friends the Kalpoe brothers, is also guilty of obstructing justice. He lied to the police on Aruba and therefore prevented the police from doing their job in those first crucial days which often lead to solutions. This is not to excuse the shoddy and downright incompetent police work that we have all witnessed since the case began We have a Deputy Police Chief who is related to half of the Island of Aruba including his very own son and who has made pronouncements which have proven to be misleading and at times, false. He has apologized for his own son and taken the word of his drugged out brother-in-law (Booty) among other things that have certainly not helped in finding a solution to what happened to Natalee. We also have other behaviors among the Aruban police which lead one to wonder if any of them are anything more than glorified security guards. The following is an example of what Joran likes and what type of person he really is...not the oh so innocent boy that his own Mother makes him out to be. Of course, being the mother of sons, I can empathize with Anita van der Sloot because we often don't know about everything our children are up to. Unfortunately, that is not an excuse for not paying closer attention to what your children are doing and a lot of us are guilty of the same resistance to reality where are children are concerned. The sad thing is that most of our children don't wind up as suspects in the disappearance of a young girl so I cannot excuse the fact that the van der Sloot's claim that Joran never did anything wrong and that his past behavior showed nothing in his character to even allow them to believe that he could possibly be involved. I think that they know better. Perhaps if Paulus and Anita had checked his computer activity they would have realized what their son was really involved in and they could have added it to the long litany of character references that they now give him whenever interviewed. Perhaps the civil lawsuit that claims that Paulus is in part responsible for his son's alleged behavior would not have been necessary if they had paid closer attention to what Joran was doing when he wasn't "sporting" and getting "high marks" in school. After reading about some of Joran's after school activities I wonder where he found the time to do anything of a "Sporting" or scholastic nature? Joran van der Sloot may never be charged with a crime regarding Natalee Holloway but he will NOT be remembered as that perfect boy that his parents would have us believe he is. He will be remembered for his lies and his interest in tourist girls and maybe most of all; for bragging about being a "PIMP".
