Stop That Billy Peterson

By Bob D. Caterino
Apr. 29, 2006

Do you know why we say “What you don't know won't hurt you?” I knew a boy named Billy when I was about twelve. Billy would do many things I wouldn't dream of doing. He would put his hand into the monkey cage at the zoo. He held out some pellets they sold in a machine but were intended for goats and sheep. The monkey would grab the pellets from Billy and eat them. Then someone would tell him that monkey's bite or will grab at your hand and cause harm. Billy didn't know this and had no problem with the monkey. He stopped after the guy told him it was wrong.

One snowy day in Jersey, I think it was a record breaking three feet of snow and Billy build a huge igloo and for at least a week lived in that ice palace he built. Once again someone told him it would collapse on him and smother him to death. Billy just watched his igloo melt days after day, from his window, until it was nothing but a puddle on the ground.

Fear is taught, programmed into us at an early age. For a week Billy had his home made fort or fed that monkey until someone told him it was wrong to do it that it may hurt him. Everything he tried to do someone was always there to tell him he shouldn't. Well I haven't seen Billy for at least ten years and low and behold while I was waiting for a bus Billy came walking up to me. He remembered me and I him. We shook hands and talked about things we were doing. Billy told me he was working on an engine that actually ran on water. He spent ten years and had the thing running for ten minutes. He then brought it to a few companies and everyone told him that it was impossible. He smiled and told me it was nice to see me again and ran off. A few seconds later Billy pulled up in a 1952 Dodge and asked if I needed a lift and I said sure and hopped in. When he dropped me off at my home I invited him in for a cup of coffee. We talked some more and he looked at his watch and told me he was late for a meeting with his sister. Before he left he asked if I had a bucket or large bottle he could use. I had a gallon jug and handed it to him. He filled it with water from the tap. I figured he needed it for his cars radiator. I asked if he wanted to use my garden hose and he smiled. He took the hose and when I saw him place the nozzle into his gas tank I started to stop him but I didn't. Instead I waited until he was finished he beeped his horn and waved goodbye when he pulled away.

One person's fears should stay their own. If you teach fear then there will never be progress. Babies are born swimmers but we tell them they can drown and some grow up to fear the water. Billy was not a smart person, he just didn't know any better until someone butted in. He just didn't know he couldn't until someone told him he couldn’t.
