Apr. 28, 2006 In the U-K rebuttals forum on religion the issue of morality and ethics has come up. Nevertheless, on that forum I haven't seen a fundamental human truth mentioned. This truth is relevant. The truth is that every toddler needs a hero-giant who gives awesome shoulder rides and who functions as a role model. What the hero-giant does and says is exemplary. Without necessarily calling the toddler's hero God, little children require such a role model to feel satisfied and secure. The young human brain simply needs a providential, real, live, God-in-the-flesh. Later on, creative people may sublimate or even hallucinate images out of their early childhood and even make a supernature out of these images. But supernature's only sauce, not meat. Each healthy developing child pays rapt attention to what goes on around the home, the neighborhood, and the school. In the innocence of rapid early neurological development, the innate ethics and morality is displayed by each and every little hero-worshipper. A corollary is that when young children see bigger brats getting away with murder, the callows respect and imitate the bug muggers. For example, some tykes will be seen pulling legs off grasshoppers and killing butterflies by pulling off their wings. Older children may squash snails under their hard boots or shoot birds for sport. Then, as out of little acorns the mighty oaks grow, many little muggers develop into more dangerous and destructive characters. As the twig is bent, so is the tree inclined. Development of nuclear weapons and other WMDs doesn't complicate the ethics-morality issue. Modern high-tech capabilities just make it mandatory that parents and educators truly master human growth and development. The human future is at stake, and time is short. Humanity needs the exemplary character, the way-shower, the peace-teacher, the over-seer. Whether you make Daddy or Mommy into a fairy tale deity or demon or not, the fundamental truth is that every child needs an awesome role model. The child who grows up without a good role model has little satisfaction even when this child manages to perform well. The young man who is a model mugger may feel better when he has hundreds of devoted backup mugger followers. If you follow him, then from your point of view he is good. If you don't follow him, well, then, from your point of view he is evil. The truth of ethics and morals is secondary to the fundamental truth: What is bad for the person who gets mugged is good for the person who steals the mugged person's property. Whole societies follow this pattern. Gods change, but the human pattern remains invariant. To view the human pattern, you over-see the big picture. Modern parents-to-be need to study human development. Human development is well understood. Every professional counselor knows that a child needs an awesome role model. One does not have to call this role model God, of course. One doesn't have to call a rose a rose, either. So relax and look THROUGH the screen and see what is in back of the screen. See the big picture and think in pictures like Temple Grandin promotes in her book "Thinking in Pictures." Your brain will get extra exercise. Getting all caught up and tangled in a verbal net cripples the whole-brained full human potential.
