Not All Atheists Are Cutting-Edge Political Thinkers

By Thomas Keyes
Apr. 27, 2005

I received a note from fellow UK contributor David Gleeson commenting on an article I wrote entitled “Christians Who Disobey Jesus By Hating Their Enemies”. I wrote the article in response to a hateful anti-Islamic diatribe penned by a Christian fundamentalist, and part of my article dealt with Jewish control of the media and the bias against Islam that this control has fomented. I did not present any statistics, though I have them, you can be sure. Incidentally, Gleeson and I are both atheists, so their is no disagreement on the religious aspect of the topic.

Anyway, here is the rather obnoxious e-mail I got from Gleeson:

“A terrorist walks into a restaurant and blows himself, and 20 innocent people, to pieces. Question: What religion does this person subscribe to?

“The restaurant is in Tel Aviv. What nationality is this person?

“The reason that it’s so easy to answer these questions—knowing nothing else about this person, his childhood, his social status, his upbringing—is telling. Jews aren’t blowing themselves up for their ‘cause’. Whatever atrocities have been visited upon the Palestinians 1) pale in comparison to the atrocities leveled at the Jews, 2) are mostly of their own making.

“Your claim that Jews single-handedly control the media is so preposterous, so childish, so utterly devoid of factual basis, that it deserves nothing but contempt. The country is 75% Christian and only 3% Jewish—you do the math. When you write about other topics, you are lucid and thought-provoking. When you write about this one, you are one step away from country-bumpkin, backwater anti-Semitism.

“You ignore the obvious fact that this country is, in fact, run by Evangelical Christians, who see it as in their best interests to have a strong Israel butting heads with an increasingly erratic Muslim population. Why? Because they believe in a literal interpretation of the book of Revelation. This fact seems to have escaped you completely. In your zeal to blame everything on “The Jews” (you’ll have to explain to me at some point how my wife and daughters fit into this vast conspiracy), you seem to have put logic on the back burner. Stick to what you’re good at.”

This e-mail is so riddled with flaws, faults, fallacies and foibles, that tearing it to shreds is an easy matter.

First, let me note that Gleeson says his wife is Jewish, and this may mean that he’s unwilling to listen to any derogatory comments about Jews, even if they’re true. Yes, it’s entirely possible that Jews have perpetrated misdeeds, even if Gleeson’s wife is Jewish. What if Gleeson’s wife were an Arab? Wouldn’t he be equally unwilling to hear Arabs criticized? I don’t think that the ethnicity of Gleeson’s wife should be a factor in my political views, which are based on facts that I’ve spent some time gathering.

Then, getting smart, he says that sometime I’ll have to explain how his wife and daughters fit into the ‘vast conspiracy’. No, I won’t have to explain, because I didn’t say they did. I was talking about powerful Jewish manipulators, not housewives. He apparently uses the word ‘conspiracy’ because of its paranoiac connotations, perhaps attempting to make me appear balmy or irrational. What he is really doing, though, is trying to pass off a trick as a piece of sound logic. He is trying to say that obviously his wife and daughters are not part of a vast conspiracy, and, therefore, there is no vast conspiracy. This is like saying that he has a nice Russian girlfriend and that therefore the brutalities of Russian Communism never happened. Gleeson has to think of some slightly more cogent argument to debunk the ‘conspiracy theory’ that Jewish indoctrination via the media has him perceiving in my evaluation of US Middle East policy.

Mentioning anti-Semitism has nothing to do with anything I’m talking about. I am stating demonstrable facts about Jews. To suggest that I am inventing libels and slanders to gratify a preconceived dislike of Jews, based on a backwater mindset, is ridiculous. I haven’t had many experiences with Jews in recent years, and they were not at all problematic.

He mentions that America is 75% Christian and 3% Jewish, and tells me “do the math”, if this is what he calls it, meaning that Jews cannot possibly control the media, given their small numbers. America is around 80% white and 12% black. Does that mean that anyone who says blacks make up 75% of professional basketball players cannot “do the math”? It’s hard to believe that an engineer is not more incisive than that. Of course there are racial and ethnic differences—in physique, intelligence, aptitude and behavior. Anyone who doesn’t recognize that does not know much about the real world. He has merely adopted the fashionable egalitarianisms propounded by the media. Jews evidence a proclivity to rise to the top and manipulate society. This is a simple fact.

Gleeson goes on to say that the wrongs done Jews far outweigh the wrongs done Palestinians, and no doubt he’s right, but is that Palestinians’ fault? Who asked Jews to come to Palestine and take over in the first place? Why are the US and Israel in the Middle East at all?

Yes, Palestinians make terrorist attacks. This is the only recourse of a penurious population that is aggrieved by a well-organized powerful state backed by a superpower. If Palestine had an army and arms, they’d use them, I’m sure. Let us not forget men like the late Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, who blew up a hotel full of Englishmen, but he’s Jewish, so he go the Nobel Peace Prize. And that’s not the only case of Jewish terrorism. For example, the FBI classifies the Jewish Defense League as a terrorist outfit.

It beggars all description that Gleeson calls my contention that Jews control the media “so preposterous, so childish, so devoid of factual basis, as to deserve only contempt”. I might understand if he argued that perhaps I had overstated my case somewhat—though I did not—but to call it “devoid of a factual basis” is stupidity. Surely, Gleeson knows that the Sulzbergers run the New York Times, that the Meyers (Grahams) run the Washington Post, that Kann runs the Wall Street Journal, that Normal Perlstine runs Time and Fortune, that Mortimer Zuckerman runs US News and World Report, Gerald Levin ran and supposedly still runs AOL-Time-Warner, that Eisner runs ABC, and that Fourtou (Levy) runs Vivendi-Universal. These alone would make a good case for Jewish control of the media. But there are dozens of others as well. What planet does Gleeson live on? Where has he been? Doesn’t he do any fact-checking before he starts his name-calling? No basis at all! I can hardly believe he made that remark.

I wasn’t talking about Gleeson’s wife. He doesn’t need to get quixotic and jabber nonsense to protect her honor.

He’s right about one thing. I didn’t take Revelation into consideration. The power brokers don’t talk about Revelation when they draw up their plans for invasion and war.
