Has There Ever Been Truth In Advertising?

By Amanda Baker
Apr. 27, 2006

"Truth in Advertising"? Do you get to dance like Britney Spears if you drink a Pepsi(tm)? Will that hot woman be there if you drink a beer? Is that SUV really the best purchase for your family because you can go off road with it? If you eat a burger from Mcdonald's(tm) do you get to look like Beyonce Knowles? Could you really make baskets every time if you drink a sports drink?

I ask these questions because I am perplexed. I really think this world has been saturated with billions of dollars of advertising trying to get people to buy products they simply don't need. Do you really need to go to a store and buy every new pair of shoes for the season as you see a woman do in a "Shoe Warehouse"(tm) commercial?

It is not just advertising in the 20 second spots that bother me. It's watching programs like the "Today Show"(tm) and seeing that I need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe because the clothing I bought last month are out of season. (By the Way, I like the news portions of that show and when they have nutrition spots.) The average person can't afford to keep up.

Why can't parents use advertising and slogan's to influence their children?

I guess the answer is that as a parent I don't have billions of dollars to influence my children by hiring an Advertising Firm. I don't have clowns or catchy phrases. I don't have glossy full page adds in magzines to make them remember that smoking won't make them cool, it will make them sick but in magazine adds you see a cool looking beautiful woman. Or if I don't want my child to have a soda and I point out health risks of eating empty calories, I still am up against cool adds with hot woman or men drinking the beverage with slogans.

So, there is no real truth in advertising, just flash. Ever so often you find that cleaning products do live up to their claim that they do work. But then you have to think about the product flowing down the drain and what it might do for the future enviroment. But that is okay as long as the counter does not have bateria. Oh, but we are making super bateria's because the product only cleans 99% of the germs.

I will keep trying to find catchy ways to get my child's attention. If I can come up with a slogan that works I will. If I decide to share what works for me, giving it away for free, but the slogan offends one small portion of the population then that is okay. The lack of truth to advertising sure does bug me, doesn't it with you?
