![]() By Kaycee Nilson Apr. 24, 2006 Today, Monday, April 24, 2006, my youngest child turns 4 years old. It is hard to believe that just yesterday I was giving birth to him. They lay him upon my chest with his cord still attached, and I swear to all that is holy, he lifted his head and looked at me square in the eye. That was the day I fell in love with someone I just met face to face. Oh I have had that happen two other times, but this time, something about those big blue eyes that made me speechless. They kept him in my room, And all I could do is stand over the top of him snapping picture after picture of the sleeping angel. I knew that this was going to be my last chance of starting fresh with a child God gave to me. His mannerisms, his looks, even how he sleeps is just like his father. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. I remember the day I gave birth to him, even though it was late April, there was snow on the ground. From my hospital window, I had a beautiful view of Lake Michigan. His father gave him his first bath and then after some more picture taking, Father and Son fell asleep with the baby on Daddy’s chest in the recliner in my room. All I could do is to lay there and watch them both lovingly even though I was exhausted. Since then, I have other pictures of Daddy and baby sleeping together. I also have pictures of baby and his brother and sister sleeping together. I even have pictures of baby in the cat bed! His smile lights up the faces of people walking by. And he always is in a full run, never at a walk. It seems that he is in a hurry to get everywhere, never slowing to watch life around him. But there will be time for that as he grows. His sister dotes on him and I don’t think his feet touched the ground for his first two years. She spoiled him rotten and now he misses her terribly bad. He now follows his big brother all over and wants to do the same things that Bubba does. He starts school this fall, we have been working with him and he can write “t’s” and “a’s’. He also knows that “C” stands for his first name, and when his full name calls him, he knows he is in trouble. He takes his punishments like he is older than his tender pre-school age. Everything is his, no matter what it is or whom the original owner is. He is at that “Mine Mine Mine!” stage of life. And for once, instead of it getting on my last nerve, I have to smile because it maybe the last time I go through this phase. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, "Night Falls on Chicago."
