The Bible And Paranormal Activity

By Kristy Schiller
Apr. 24, 2006

Growing up in a strict religious household and seeing spirits was very difficult for me. I fought with the rationale, my sanity and my religion. It wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I decided to consult my minister, a conservative Missouri Synod Lutheran.

As I sat down across from the man, his eyes looked into mine with wonder. I was the good girl of the school and the church; a straight ‘A’ student, active in youth groups, the choir, the band, drama, varsity sports – an All American Girl – so the reason why I was sitting across from him wringing my hands profusely confused him. Not necessarily knowing how to begin, I merely blurted out “I see ghosts. I see angels. I see spirits. And they talk to me!” My minister looked at me without expression and asked me to explain more in depth to the degree of communication. At that moment his son came through. A son I never knew he even had. A son nobody knew he had and who he had lost. Tears shone in his eyes and he hugged me, giving me his blessing to pursue the work he believed I was given by God, my savior Jesus. It sounds oh so simple, but a theology debate with me playing the devil’s advocate took place over a matter of a few hours. I continued to consult with him and he would counsel me and I would often counsel him. He told me that it wouldn’t be easy, me being who I was, but that if it were easy everybody would do it. He also cautioned me on the types of people who would try to ridicule me, play theology Jeopardy with me and mock me. UK offers me many of those people and most of the time I hit that wonderful button called ‘delete’ and yet other times I find that I have time to debate the issue. I do not look for acceptance from anybody and I don’t go knocking on doors as a Jehovah’s Witness would attempting to pound in the skeptics minds that I am religious, that I DO believe in God and that I am saved. I could just call it being a Spiritualist Witness, I suppose, but instead I do what I did with my pastor – I merely blurt out that I see spirits.

Traditional Christian religion preach that ghosts are impossible and do not exist, when in fact there are several examples of paranormal activity in The Bible. The one misconception is that a ghost and a spirit are two separate things. Wrong. Ghosts and spirits are one in the same, people who have died and visit from the other side of the grave. Let me share several examples.

Samuel 28:15 - Saul calls upon a spirit medium to "call up" the prophet Samuel from the other side of the grave. “And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.”

The belief that there were ghosts is founded when Jesus walks on water and when he does so the disciples in the boat were freaked out. Apparitions obviously existed for His followers to state what they did. Matthew 14:26 "and the disciples having seen him walking upon the sea, were troubled saying, 'It is an apparition,' and from the fear they cried out."

Mark 9:1-6 - And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. And after six days Jesus taketh [with him] Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into a high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.

Even in the Bible the people were afraid of the unknown; afraid of the spirit life, but Jesus continued to prove that the spirit life existed and continues to exist.

Mark 9 - But Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken my Lord, and I don't know where they laid him." When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" She thought it was the gardener and said to him, "Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him." Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni," 9 which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, "Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord".

I am sure I get a mailbox full of Bible verses. But let me read you a passage. “Lucy picked the mail up and began to cry.” Do you understand the full story from that quote? No, me either. I chose a random book on my shelf and picked out one small passage. You have to read the entire book to understand. And then unlike this book that I just picked up, The Bible has been translated over and over, Books are missing, and other passages completely erased and re-written. But in my heart of hearts I know what I believe in and so does Jesus, God and the Holy Ghost, of whom I pray to each night.

Love, Light and God’s Blessings,
Kristy
