Apr. 23, 2006 I was gOOgle Searching the song Lyrics "Cotton Fields. " When I was a little bitty baby My mama would rock me in the cradle, In them old cotton fields back home; It was down in Louisiana ……… This was always a song that I associated with Creedence Clearwater Revival. This was my favorite Southern Rock Group as a youngster. I was surprise to discover that Western Singer, Ferlin Husky sang it first. It occurred to me that I named my dog after a Country Singer that I’ve never heard sing. Last year, I
was at the Humane Society and saw a pair of sad mismatched puppy dog eyes looking on the outside of the of the doggie jail, telling me that he really wanted out of there. He was a husky/hound mixed mutt. The previous owner’s landlord said, "the mutt had to go because he had grown too big." What the heck, I live the rural country and he’s just the right size for my household. His name was Duncan, I certainly did not want an animal named after a character in Macbeth, nevertheless the mutt became a member of our family. We were walking in Downtown Lewisburg by the Confederate Graveyard. An older woman admired the dog and asked his name. I told her that I didn’t know yet since I just acquired him. She suggested the named Ferlin because of the mutt’s Husky heritage. Thus Ferlin Duncan McKinsey is a much loved member of our household. I am delighted to discover that his namesake sang one of my favorite songs. Ferlin Husky the Singer
was known in the 1950’s. In the 1950’s, I was an Army Brat in Germany. I knew some Marching Tunes that Sergeant Dad taught us. "In 1964, my Mother Went to War, She opened the door and peed on the floor and THAT was the end of the war. You’re in the Army now, you’re not behind the plow. You are digging a ditch, you son of a…………. Hay Foot, Straw Foot, Hay Foot, Straw, Foot Hay!!!! Ump Pah Ump Pah Ump Pah Pah!" The namesake of my future dog was churning out Gold Records, but I didn’t know who he was in my part of the world. Ferlin Husky was singing "On the Wings of a Snow White Dove…………… and I was listening to German Beer Drinking Songs. I also remember a silly song that my parents played on the record player. "Oh! Ah! E E E! Wally Wally Bing Bang …………………" Eventually, we returned back to the United States. I became a teenager. Bell Bottoms and the Beatles were on the Horizon. There was the
Monkees, the Beach Boys and the Men from Uncle. I became a young woman and started hanging around Country Bars. "I wish I was your teddy bear, not living or loving or going nowhere and I wished I would have never have fallen in love with you…….. I soon concluded that Firewater and me don’t get along so I became a twelve stepping teetotaler. Nevertheless, I always loved Alabama and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Somehow, I managed to go though life and never hear of Ferlin Husky until the day I met an older lady while walking my newly acquired Husky Hound Mutt in the confederate graveyard. The Country Singer Ferlin Husky does have an awesome mutt named after him. . Oh, when those cotton ball get rotten You can't pick very much cotton In them old cotton fields back home………..
