Rise In Pornography Can Be Attributed To American Conservatism [Part 2]

By Nicholas Olson
Apr. 20, 2006

If anyone bothered to read the last column, which was rebutted twice, they obviously didn't read it close enough.

The article was about sex workers, or more accurately, those members of the pornographic industry that are not the likes of Jenna Jameson or Ron Jeremy.

The world of sex work that I was referring to is those who end up on some Web site with their pretty little faces and their dignity hanging out in the wind. It is those that do not look like they belong their selling their innocence for a couple hundred bucks because it is better than working the swing shift at a factory or the counter at the local fast food joint.

But what price for this glory? Is there any dignity lost for these young souls who merely want to buy things or pay the rent? In my opinion, and what a lowly opinion it is, I believe that is not how they dreamed of making a living.

With the rise of commerce comes the need to keep up with our neighbors, no matter how we pretend to not want it. Humans have ingrained instinct to want we can't have and a need to compete, no matter what the goal is. We are all victims of wanting to covet thy neighbors possessions, even if it is only a replica of their toys.

Conservatism is the want for a utopia of self-restraint, CYA and control of how those around you go about their lives. I am not talking about the true Republicans who have been pushed by the wayside in this country. They have been replaced by neoconservative, libertarians and one-issue voters. Those people are the ones that push for no sex education and push for totalitarian control of our children by forcing them to conform until they can only find solace in being "rebels."

I am a country hick myself who only finished college and some post college education. I have also only been around for a little under 32 years so what the heck do I know? Maybe I have been paying attention when I hear that a young woman can make $10,000 for posing nude in Playboy, thinking that it will somehow lead to a Hollywood career or that a porn actress can make $600-800 for a sex scene.

I also have talked to strippers. I do not frequent their clubs but I have gone occasionally years ago with my friends. I just did not find the experience all that great, personally. But, at times, I had conversations with the girls. On one occasion I talked to a girl who was going to college and stripped to make her truck payment. Another time I met one who had a daughter at home and needed to pay the rent because her boyfriend ran out on her. God bless America.

When a person puts their body on display for money, there is an innocence lost. It is not a value taught by parents unless their parents wanted them to go into that lifestyle, which I doubt many are supportive of.

I blame conservatism because it pushes denial of human instinct. I think we are drawn to sex otherwise our private parts would not feel they way they do during intercourse or other sexual activities. If you believe in God, then you can at least agree that there is a reason it "feels good."

But I digress. The reason I blame conservatism is that it makes what it forbids seem like a thing we have to have. If kids didn't sign abstinence-only pledges, then they would be less, not more, likely to break such pledges (don't believe me, look it up).

As I said before, it was an unintended affect but it is an affect nonetheless. It just like the mainstream media feeding on our desire to see more sex everywhere. It is because we want it. Just as it was explained to me recently, it was the Victorian era, the one where we started putting on more clothes because we got a lot of syphilis in those days, can be blamed on early conservatism but it did not do anything to make us stop wanting sex.

Americans can live in denial and believe that reading the Bible or lower taxes will cause us all to live better lives but they are sadly mistaken. It is the lack of the attentiveness to our offspring that leads them to believe that they have to have everything, no matter the price. Women will keep allowing themselves to be part of an industry that does not truly glorify anything but mistreatment all to make some cash.

Peace.
