A Taste Test Of Jellybeans

By Kaycee Nilson
Apr. 18, 2006

When Easter comes around, out come the retail stores with jellybeans of all colors and flavors. I remember as a kid, only having the Brach’sâ jellybeans.

But now nearly every candy company has tried to out-do the Jelly Bellyâ Company for flavors and a share in the market place. Starburstâ, Sweet-tartsâ, Brach’sâ and even Hammond’s Candy Factoryâ have all come out with spring flavors.

But Jelly Bellyâ jellybeans have year round flavors like Margarita, Buttered popcorn. Chocolate Fudge and even Pina Colada. I have ate my way through the “Harry Potter” line of Jelly Bellyâ including such delicacies as “Dirt,” “Grass,” and “Boogers,”

Sounds gross doesn’t it?

But the Sweet-tartâ brand of jellybeans tastes just like the big chewy concoctions that I loved as a kid with Peach Nehiâ. I think I overdosed on these this year! And the Starburst have the normal flavors, Strawberry, Grape, Cherry, Lemon, and they have their tropical line with lovely flavors as Coconut, Berry Punch and Pineapple.

This year we purchased the Sour Starburstâ jellybeans. The tangerine in this line leaves much to the taste buds. The watermelon was so sour, I thought my face was going to pucker in. The Green Apple reminded me of a Jolly Rancher. The sour Cherry was as gross as Nyquil in the cherry flavor. The Lemon one’s would be a great topper for a margarita. The blue berry killed my taste buds to were my coffee tasted like hot water.

I think that next year I am going to stay with the Jelly Bellyâ jellybeans. But I am for sure going to stay away from the “Harry Potter” series, as the last thing I want in my mouth again is the infamous “Booger” flavor.

The only jellybean flavor on this entire earth that I refuse to eat is the black licorice. Tastes too much like Ouzo to me. And black licorice is not one of my favorite flavors.

I have eaten my way through so many jellybean flavors that this column could easily end up as a 1,000 word essay on the flavoring of the Jelly Bellyâ entire line. For you see, I live very close to the factory and can take tours of the factory ending up in the outlet store and bankrupting us on just jellybeans alone.

But my most favorite flavors are the chocolate ones. What do you expect from a chocoholic????
