![]() By Kaycee Nilson Apr. 16, 2006 I recently wrote an article suggesting a conspiracy plot against President Abraham Lincoln. Most of what I wrote was my viewpoint on a TV Show on the HISTORY CHANNEL. That brings me to my point. All history books are is interpretations of events from the writer’s point of view. The only people that REALLY know what happened are the ones that witnessed the events and even then their letters, diaries, and so forth are from THEIR point of view. History books are re-written all the time or our children of today would believe that the Berlin Wall is still standing and that Russia is still the Soviet Union. Why those born after 1969 would not believe that Man walked on the moon! My fiancé Dan, was taught in elementary and middle school the same thing that my original point was, that Massacres meant an Native American win and a Victory was an Anglo win in a war. But now history books ARE being re-written that the word massacre is used on both parties savage attacks against each other. I have visited many war sites where the Native Americans were pushed off the land that they resided on long before Columbus landed in the “new world.” Every time I visit a battlefield, I get sick and I have to go sit in the car. I don’t know why but I even get sick at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. Or the monument at Goliad, Texas. And to think Military History was my minor in college. (Yes it’s hard to believe but I DID go and graduate college!) Even the “Gospels” of the New Testament in your bibles are written from different viewpoints and different voices. So can that be called racist? Opinions of historical facts have been with us for thousands of years. History books are written from the viewpoint of the author and the research materials they gather and put together. I just believe that all school children should have access to all books on all matters of history and allowed to form their own viewpoints of what they have read. For it is the freethinking of the future that may save the human race from making the same mistakes of the past. Opinions belong to each individual. Thank god there are photographs of the Battle of Antietam or the different points of view may conflict with each other over the events of that battle would be varied and not unknown. I am not saying that the conspiracies of assassinations are true, I am only going upon what I read and hear. For those that are lazy and don’t want to read books about this, the miracle of cable have brought us the History Channel and A&E for us to form our own opinions about historical events. The only evidence of King Tut is in his burial tomb, we know so little of the Pharaohs of Egypt except for what is buried in the tombs. Most Native American history is lost; they are passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. Even though some of the books containing the American Native point of view now exist, but there are so many stories lost or forgotten. And what a shame this is. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, "Night Falls on Chicago." The first two chapters can be viewed at http://www.KayceeNilson.com.
