Apr. 16, 2006 Disgraced Rep. Tom DeLay's decision to resign from Congress is good news for citizens who value clean government. The "Peanuts" character "Pigpen" was constantly enveloped in a cloud of dust, the ethically-challenged Republican leader is perpetually covered in a cloud of corruption. Anyone with a shred of decency would have responded to DeLay's resignation with a sigh of relief, President Bush lamented his resignation, which speaks volumes of Bush's character. DeLay attempted to spin his resignation as an act of party loyalty, but it's no coincidence that his decision came three days after Tony C. Rudy, his former deputy chief of staff, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and corruption charges. In an interview with Pat Robertson, DeLay said he had “spent a lot of time praying and fasting†in reaching the decision to vacate his Congressional seat. Yeah right, he was counting votes, not praying, and the votes just weren't there to guarantee reelection. Now that DeLay has left Congress, where can the snake oil salesman go to exploit his oily charms? According to the "Washington Post", "DeLay recently told one of his pastors that God wanted him to leave Congress in part because He has bigger plans for DeLay." The smarmy world of evangelical hucksters has welcomed Tom DeLay with open arms. "We're saddened by your announcement," Pat Robertson told DeLay during an interview on "The 700 Club " ... You've been a stalwart for conservative causes." What makes Tom DeLay tick isn't ideology, but power. It was his unquenchable thirst for power that led to his downfall. Fundamentalist power-loving charlatans like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson recognize Tom DeLay as one of their kind. I don't think DeLay will become a televangelist, but he will use the evangelical TV pulpit to further his nefarious goals. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like DeLay will disappear, thanks to the televangelists he will continue to have a platform to perform his evil magic. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes has written over 200 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
