Apr. 15, 2006 The first time I listened to Howard was on AM radio on a station called WNBC. The cast consisted of Jackie Martling, a local comedian / writer, Robin Quivers, the News reporter, Earth dog Fred Norris, his sidekick from a smaller station, and Boy Gary, a gofer, lackey, runner, minion, flunky with the biggest teeth and gums anyone has ever seen anywhere in the world. Howard was afternoon drive at the time and after the first ratings came out he was on top. With characters like Mamma lickaboobooday, the African American traffic reporter, and (out of the closet) Stern and his sidekick Blackswell, and many other bits I can't seem to remember the show kept rising to surpass the top rated Imus in the morning program. Howard beat out all the FM radio shows in any timeslot. Fighting tooth and nail with management with anything he tried to put on the air, Howard was frustrated at the least. After a good run NBC fired the personality for putting on the air bestiality dial a date. Before he had the bit aired he was pulled and we listened to static for the next three hours. Oh we sat there and waited to see what happened. Shortly after being tossed into the streets on New York Howard was picked up to air his show on a rock station WXRK. He brought his zany regulars with him although on a bet with the failing Soupy Sales show he vowed that anyone can be a producer so he made Boy Gary Del Abate, the gofer his new producer and took on a stammering stuttering John Melendez as his top interviewer in the field. Gary got the guests in any manor he can muster up. He hung around other shows grabbing anyone he could for Howard. After his first year it was fashionable to be on Howard's show. Now every star and their mothers wanted to be on The Howard Stern Pangram. Howard went from the bad boy of radio to the foremost broadcaster on the air but that was no longer enough for this clown prince of the airwaves. Now Howard lands a television show on UPN 9 in New York. The show was truly R rated and was pulled after a year of programming. Howard ran for Governor and his attempt failed without putting up a great fight. He advised Governor Pataki on some issues and he placed then into play. Howard went on to write two best selling books as well as a hit movie. His pay per view specials are still talked about today. Howard was now the star he always wanted to be. But was this enough to keep this comedic legend happy? NO WAY JOSE. He put on live shows at venues that only top comedians would fill. He also moved his show to XM radio which is picking up new viewers every day. He immortalized his parents for the length of his career. His dad best known for his "Shut up, Sit down" ranting was a hit with regular listeners. His mother who is the "queen of denial" doesn't think Howard had the life he talks about. Howard always claimed abuse, whether it was having to attend an all black school for the sake of equality or forcing his dad to yell at least one hundred times a day at him throughout his life. His mom always had a selective memory when it came down to Howard's life as a young child and young man. Howard always claimed he was doing theater of the mind. His antics will not be duplicated in our lifetime and he will always think up new ideas which many will steal for their own gains in the business. Whether you hate him or love him he will always be watched, listened to or talked about for starting the biggest trend in the field today. If it weren't for Howard there would be no morning shows or talk shows as we know it. Thanks for this American icon, we have more freedoms of speech then we have ever had before. He paved the way for Shadow Lynn Parker, author, Opie and Anthony, talk show hosts, Radio Chick, radio personality, Ron and Fez, radio funnymen and many others which will remain nameless because they just don't make the grade. ------------ About the author: Bob D Caterino is a writer that we all either hate or love.
