 By Kaycee Nilson Apr. 14, 2006 On this date in history, John Wilkes Booth shot beloved 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln while President Lincoln was at the National Theater watching a new play called “Our American Cousin.” This is the history lesson that every American school child is taught about the assassination of President Lincoln. But was it all Booth, who was a Southern Sympathizer? Or was there a conspiracy behind the shooting? The History Channel had a program asking these same questions. They raised some good questions about the man and the myth that was Abe Lincoln. For instance, the monument that houses what is supposed to be the Lincoln Cabin where “Honest Abe” was born, doesn’t really contain the actual cabin that Lincoln was born in! Carbon dating puts the logs of the cabin a good 50 years after the birth of Lincoln. So what other myths are we as school children in America taught about the life and death of Abraham Lincoln? What other conspiracy theories are we not teaching our children about American History in general? Why is it when Anglos won a war against Native Americans, in the history books, they are referred to as “victories” but yet if the Native Americans won, it’s called a “massacre?’ Because it is the Anglos that wrote the history books, that’s why!
