Psalm 111 - The Lord Deserves Eternal Praise

“1 Praise the LORD. I will extol the LORD with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. 2 Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them. 3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever.” (Psalm 111:1-3 NIV)

The Psalmist here knows the Lord. This is seen in his praise. He has every reason and right to praise. The Lord’s works for his chosen people were indeed great. A nation was born out of a terrible slavery. Those who followed the pillar of fire out of Egypt saw many wonders. The ones who followed Joshua into the promised lands saw many more. There was every reason to praise God knowing that his promises to the nation were eternal.

“4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate. 5 He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.” (vs. 4-5)

And God has certainly “caused his wonders to be remembered”. Long after the wonders of false gods have blown away on the winds the wonders of the true God of heaven still confound the wisdom of men who reject miracles and the forces of the Spirit. The written commentary of God explains his attitude and actions against sin and immorality. He also explains the shelter available against his necessary wrath against sin. The Lord is “compassionate and gracious”. If that were not true then no man would ever claim salvation. It is God that has supplied the “bread of life” through the sacrifice of his only begotten. God remembers his covenant even when men reject and forget.

“6 He has shown his people the power of his works, giving them the lands of other nations. (vs.6)

And God has done this. He gave lands to those who were faithful. He stripped away the inheritance of those who rejected and walked away from the covenant. God repeatedly sent his warnings to his nation and those surrounding, but men decided to heed their own hearts and make their own gods; condemning themselves in their ignorance. God has not changed in countless millennia. He will always hate sin. He must always judge sin or he is not the true and holy God. Yet, his offer of grace stands in that same eternal light.

“7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. 8 They are steadfast for ever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness.” (vs.7-8)

Unbelieving men don’t really care about God’s faithfulness; Yet God remains faithful to his words and his promises. God is not arbitrary in judgment. Because he is absolutely righteous he must reject all sin. Anyone who desires to approach God must approach in righteousness. The only possible righteousness man can be assigned is that of God himself. The righteousness must be that of an equal. It is gained by the washing of the soul in the blood of the acceptable sacrifice; Jesus the Messiah. This is the “steadfast” rule of faith that will never be broken by God and can never be circumvented by men.

“9 He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever—holy and awesome is his name.” (vs.9)

God “provided redemption” because men are completely incapable of providing for their own redemption. God “ordained his covenant forever” because men will always break covenant, treaty, pact, law, agreement and word. When agreements fail to benefit men the way they believe they must be compensated, agreements will be way-sided. God will never set aside anything he has promised no matter how terrible and rejecting men become. There will always be a remnant that will see the truth, accept the truth and be redeemed by the truth.

“10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. (vs. 10)

The bottom line is that the one true God of Heaven is the only God deserving of “eternal praise”. He is the one who provides the redemption and the one eternal existence sought by men.
