The Truth And Nothing But The Truth

By Kaycee Nilson
Apr. 12, 2006

I have been accused of not being truthful with you about my health. Let me take this column to straighten things out.

In 2002 I gave birth to my youngest child in April. In November of that same year, I fell down a flight of stairs causing my backbone to break at the L5 Vertebrae. Then in 2003, Memorial Day, I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in Stage 1. I under went chemotherapy and radiation. Anyone with experience with cancer patients knows that a chemo patient looses their hair and weight real quick. In my biography page, is my picture after two treatments and I was wearing a wig to hide the fact that I had no hair.

After 6 rounds of treatments, I was declared to be in remission. But that doesn’t mean that at any time my cancer could flair up.

My children were wonderful, my oldest stepped up to the plate and took care of me the best she could. She took up the house cleaning and the cooking. Dan also took care of me while I was for sure I would die from both the treatments and the back pain that I have endured since 2002.

Yes, if you do your math, I have had back problems for the past 3 years and 5 months. I also fought cancer for 1 1/2 years. I underwent treatments and I tried my best to still be a good mother to my kids. If you don’t believe me, write to me and I’ll give you references of people that helped me through the cancer battle.

Now I have found that since the doctor I first saw about my back wouldn’t do anything about the broken bone, I have permanent nerve damage due to the physical therapy that was prescribed for a herniated disk. But the MRI’s and CT Scans showed no disk injury. But the broken bone was caught on the X-Rays.

Now the pictures on my columns are me as of November of 2005. Yes I look different, but I lost a lot of weight and my hair was not all back, so what you see is my hair and a fall to hide the bald spots until my hair grew back in. It’s still a bit spotty, but I use volumizing products to hide that fact.

I have been attacked on not being truthful and another columnist is swearing that I am lying about my health. I offer to him my doctor’s reports if he wants them.

I have suffered much, with all three pregnancies I developed illnesses with my blood pressure that caused me to be bed ridden in the third tri-mester. I have been through a lot medically, but I don’t let it get me down for I have a lot to live for. I have the love of my life, my beautiful children, and my closest and dearest friends. There is no reason why I would be attacked for being a Disabled American. And to those that don’t believe me, I think you should keep your opinions to yourself, as I am not seeking pity or a fight with anyone.

If you want to email me with something about this column or want to post something on the message board, please post a joke. Donate your next haircut to “Locks of Love,” or donate to the American Cancer Society.
