The Wisconsin Badgers - What Hockey Teams!

By Kaycee Nilson

Over this weekend, the Men’s Collegiate Hockey Tournament finished. The sport of collegiate basketball has “The Final Four,” the collegiate hockey has “The Frozen Four.”

This past Saturday, April 8, 2006, The Wisconsin Badger Men’s Hockey Team slammed Boston College in order to become the Champions. Just the weekend before, the Women’s Hockey Team won their tournament. This sets a precedence in the world of College Hockey, this is the first time that the same college has both championships in men’s and women’s hockey.

I love hockey, and the game last night was phenomenal. They had several penalties on both teams, but no one lost any teeth and no blood bounced across the ice, but it was exciting to the very end where with 2 seconds to go, Boston made a run for a goal and the puck bounced off the post of the net.

This tournament for the men has made Wisconsin a 6time winner of the Hockey Frozen Four. I’m not sure about the women’s record at this writing because I wanted to get this story out as quick as I can.

But I can report on the men’s game and the fact that one family in Wisconsin has a daughter on the women’s team and one son on the men’s team.

Ok, so here goes my take on Saturday’s Men’s Final.

There was sticking on both sides. Men skating into each other. And one Badger that was injured and limping towards the sideline and his bench, noticed a hole on the ice and his teammate passed him the puck bringing the second goal for the Badgers.

Since the “Frozen Four” was held in Milwaukee, the crowd was a sea of University of Wisconsin Red. The Badger Band played with enthusiasm and the crowd was going wild in the third period. When the game was all over, the students and family of the Badgers rushed onto the ice. The rejoicing was a sight to see. Even when both teams congratulated each other on a good game, you could see the disappointment in the faces of the Boston players.

Now I wonder if the animosity between Boston and Wisconsin will rival the 1976 results of the Minnesota team and the Boston University players. (You can catch a glimpse of what I am saying in the movie “Miracle” and due to my research, the animosity between the two teams influenced the first practices of the 1980 U.S.A. Olympic Team was real.)

I love the sport of hockey, All forms of hockey I will watch, but the “Frozen Four” was a sight to behold. And even though I live in Chicago, I am proud to have watched Wisconsin to win both the men’s and the women’s titles. I do not know if any other college has had both the men’s and women’s teams for basketball or any other sport to win their championships. But to see Wisconsin accomplish this goal for hockey was as breath taking as watching the birth of a new family member.

WAY TO GO BADGERS!!!!!!
