Apr. 10, 2006 We all love our parents unconditionally with few exceptions. We all grow and thrive through life’s journey and whether we like it or not we become parents and the process starts all over again. This has been a fact of life since the dawn of human kind. Now we find ourselves at a crossroad when our parents are not able to care for themselves any longer. We struggle with placing them in a nursing home or letting them live with us. Some choose to take them in. These are the grateful children who remember when they were in need of care. The others just place them and forget them. Oh they may visit once a month as a gesture of kindness. One out of five nursing homes are there for the buck. How many of us take the time to actually search and weed out the bad ones? When the parents complain about the treatments they receive we pass it off to dementia or Alzheimer’s. My cousin was placed in a state run facility called “Willow brook,” until it was closed down in the seventies due to unhealthy conditions. The people running these unsafe places are just there for the mighty dollar and could care less if these patients get fed nevertheless bathed and changed. We place our trust in so many only to be let down and then feel guilty when something goes wrong. Do not be afraid to confront any of these places. We, as Americans reserve the right to turn down any place that seems shady or not up to par. If we weed through these places then the goal would be to let the better ones thrive and force the bad ones to close down. These parents that can’t care for themselves any longer took care of us all those years ago. Let’s return the favor and show them we still feel. So many of us are so worried about “what’s in it for me,” when we should be thinking about others for a change. Look, look deep into your elderly mothers and fathers eyes and see the people we all know and love. They are aware of their disabilities and most likely ashamed of being old. We all have to do it; this is a part of life. One day we will be walking in their shoes and wonder if karma will take a part in our own future. We may wake up finding ourselves bed ridden with bed sores and starving sleeping in seven day old clothes and a bath a month. “THINK!” The eleventh hour is upon us. ------------ About the author: Bob D Caterino is a writer that we all either hate or love.
