The Baby In The Picture

By Kaycee Nilson
Apr. 10, 2006

The above picture with Tony Stewart’s car is one of my favorite pictures. It combines two of the things I love, NASCAR and my goddaughter Kiata. She had her hair done up with orange ribbons and no one yelled at her when she tried to climb into the window. At the time of this picture she was about 8 months old. Crawling and getting into everything, and for some reason, I loved it. I don’t seem to mind it when she slobbers on my things. I love that little girl.

Now she’s over a year old and toddling everywhere. She still has that glorious smile that sends me to my knees. I never thought that a baby that was birthed by another could give the gift of unconditional love like my Kiata has done to me.

My children all know to leave my Tony Stewart cap alone. So the look of horror on their faces when they see Kiata chewing away on the brim is a MasterCard moment. She also loves to eat what ever I am eating and she beats the food on me before she eats it. It’s like I am a meat tenderizer. But I don’t mind one bit. That’s the thing I miss, my kids at that same stage.

I don’t know what it is about babies that bring the most intelligent, poised adult to their knees and turn into babbling idiots. I don’t know if it’s the baby powder smell or the smile. It could be a combination of both.

I could be wrong, but when I get near babies, I turn gushy and not like the hard-core Kaycee that I normally am. But you get me near a baby human or a baby animal and I turn into a big slobbering idiot. I love my kids, I feel in love with them the minute I saw them on the sonograms. With the last one, he had a hand up like he was waving at me. I thought I was going to have my heart broke with so much love when I saw him kick and move on the sonogram.

But my Ki-ki, she just amazes me as much as my own youngest child, who turns 4 this month. Both are in the stage of amazement at everything and learning everything just like a sponge soaking up water. What I love the best is their smiles. Both babies have the best smiles that brighten up anyone’s day that is having a bad day. To have both babies around each other is so adorable because my son will kiss all over her face and say “I wuv you!” Now how can any college grad not smile at that mental picture? A little blonde blue- eyed boy kissing on that sweet face in that picture in my arms and saying “I wuv you!”

I’m sorry people, but I bet that would soften even the toughest of men.
