Apr. 9, 2006 Myspace.com, it's a well known website filled with profiles and music, and people desperate to be more popular than they are. I have an active profile on myspace, and 74 friends on my friends list. Everyday when I log on, I check my mail, my comments, and bulletins that my friends had posted. One of my friends posted a bulletin titled "Do This", so I read it, signed it, and resposted it under the title "Do this because if it was your child you would die." The post was a petition. In February of 1993, two boys, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, both ten years old, kidnapped James Bulger from a shopping mall in Liverpool, England. James was one month shy of three years old. During the few hours that young James was with the two boys, he was walked two and a half miles around town. At the end of their walk, Jon and Robert proceeded to beat, tourture, sexually assault, and murder James before they left him, minutes from death, laid over a railroad track. James Bulger's body was so mutilated that his mother was FORBIDDEN to identify his body. This month, thirteen years after they were found guilty and sentenced for the murder of James, Jon and Robert are being released after serving just over half their sentences. On top of the rather leinant punishment, Lady Justice Butler-Sloss granted both boys anonymity upon release, meaning that they will be given new names and identities to begin new lives. This is by far the most appaling thing I have ever heard in my life. When I took the time to read all fifteen chapters about James and his two murderers, I sat up for four hours and cried. I had never heard of anything so horrible happening to another human being, and the fact that it happened to a baby, and was executed by two young children scared me even more. There is no other way to describe what these two boys did other than evil; utterly evil. If you are smart person, I suggest you avoid reading the case, which I can honestly say, has affected me, and will haunt me for the rest of my life. Jon Venables and Robert Thompson are, without a doubt, evil themselves. I truly believe that these children did not get rehabilitated in prison, but rather had thirteen years to think about more horrible things to do to society. Releasing these two is the same as condemning another innocent child to a horrific death. These are not two children who got into a fist fight and accidentally hurt someone. They conciously decided to torture and murder this boy "just to find out what it felt like to kill someone". They should never be allowed in society again and I think that by releasing them, they are adding further insult to an already horrible injury for the Bulger family. I don't know how to stop or change any of the events that are unfolding in Liverpool as we speak. When everything happened in 1993, I was only 13 years old, and had I not read the Myspace.com bulletin, I would have not remember this crime ever happening. It's been forgotten. News long since past, and everyone has moved on and pushed it to the back of their minds, except for the Bulger family. Or the families of Jon and Robert, who I am sure felt much shame and remorse that their sons had done something so heinous. Thirteen years is not a reasonable sentence for the crimes that these boys committed. Life is not a reasonable sentence. And granted them anonymity is inconcievable! I pray for the Bulger family, along with the Venables and Thompson families. I pray that they have peace. And if there is a such thing as karma, I hope it's swift. ------------ Email L.J.
