A Day Without Gringos

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
Apr. 5, 2006

There was a movie, "A Day Without Mexicans," about how difficult life might be without the gardeners and hotel maids. I noted some talk recently about a boycott wherein all the Mexican students and workers would attend no schools nor show up at their jobs. This reminds me of the strikes at Eastern Airlines.

Indeed, the pilot and baggage handler and stewardess strikes may have harassed the airlines, but then again, where the heck is Eastern Airlines now?

With GM and Ford teetering on the ropes, the talk strikes of by auto workers had best remain just talk. A real strike might be the straw that broke the automakers' back.

Do workers ever consider that it is employers who write their paychecks? Is a company driven out of business by high labor costs and strikes much good to the workers? Do Mexicans ever consider that it is gringos who write their paychecks? Or, more likely, count out some tax-free greenbacks to illegal wetbacks

Perhaps we need to write, produce, and direct a movie called "A Day Without Gringos." The flood of illegal aliens across the border are coming for jobs. And they should stop to ask the question, "If I bring my culture to the USA and destroy the culture of the Norteamericanos, who's going to count out the money and pay me tax-free income?" If there are no gringos to employ the Mexicans, do they have enough water to walk all the way to Canada? Are Canadians enjoying full employment? Are they looking for workers in Canada? If the Canadians can't employ them, will they keep marching north? Do Eskimos on Hudson Bay need gardeners and maids?

No, I don't think there are jobs up in the far north. I think the Mexicans' best bet would be to stop and think before biting the hand that feeds them the greenbacks. Otherwise there might be a greenbacklash.

If Jose shrugs, Atlas might shrug too.
