Apr. 3, 2006 “25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24: 25-27) Jesus was already raised from the dead and he was preparing for his post resurrection ministry to his disciples. The disciples were in a quandary. Jesus had been killed and buried but the body was no longer in the grave and no one was admitting to having moved it. The fact was that Jesus had fulfilled his promises. Jesus came to two of his men while they walked and talked about what they had witnessed. He chided these ones for being so “slow of heart”. Then he began to open the “scriptures” to their understanding about all that had happened. The scriptures he opened were not those held in the hands of Christians in this age. They were the scriptures of the Jews; written by Moses and the Prophets hundreds of years prior to the birth of the one called “Messiah”. “28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. 29But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. 30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke24: 28-32) This is what true understanding and belief in the scriptures produces. It is knowing for a fact the validity of everything Jesus spoke of. It is knowing the Messiah and the fact that the redemption is near and applicable to all who believe. Jesus was able to open the eyes of men who were in great doubt. They had seen him die and they struggled with the words of the Lord that he must spend three days in the bowels of the earth and then rise again. The key to the understanding was in the words of Jesus as he explained the writings of Moses and the Prophets. Jesus said: “These are the words which I spoke unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.” (Luke 24:44) The centuries that passed from the time the First Adam brought men into sin and the Second Adam redeemed the race of men were centuries filled with interaction between God and men chosen to carry a specific message of hope. These Prophets and men of God were given writings and songs to carry God’s word in such a way that men would know the messiah when he finally came to the earth. Those that came to understand the words entered a relationship with God, unbreakable and eternal. Those who struggled and were “slow of heart” failed to attain the promise. But all of the promises that meant anything toward eternal relationship with God were readily and openly given to men. We have the testimonies of the eyewitnesses and we have the words of Jesus as relayed to the disciples by the Holy Spirit. We know these words to be enough for faith unto salvation because we are saved and are able to maintain that full assurance. If we did not have the New Testament writings and testimonies we would still have enough. Jesus said: “These are the words which I spoke unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.” (John 5:39) Those writings can all be found in the Hebrew Scriptures still. God is knowable. You ask for knowledge and he gives it. You ask for faith and he gives that. The scriptures are the word of God. Faith comes through hearing and understanding the simple statements of God to men. ------------ Email Skip: skiptoomaloo@hotmail.com Comment on this article here! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com.
