Hotel Versace?

By Kaycee Nilson
Apr. 1, 2006

I recently learned that the mansion of Johnny Versace is being turned into a hotel in South Beach where Versace lived and was murdered outside of. They have even turned his guesthouse into a day spa with a message called “Message A Trois!”

What’s next? “Hotel Mansfield?” Let’s turn the pink palace of Jayne Mansfield into a hotel. This makes me wonder what will become of homes of some of the greatest celebrities that are no longer with us. Is every celebrity home going to become a rental to gawking mobs? It’s bad enough that I protest the tours through “Graceland” and through Liberace’s home in Las Vegas.

Even the “White House” is a tourist attraction, but it has been for a lot of years now. What makes it so different than the “Hotel Versace?” One is mandated as a “National Landmark” and the other is a private home. That is the difference. That is why it shocks me that someone would by the Versace mansion and turn it into a hotel.

The giant of the fashion industry must be cringing at the thought of for a fee; people can sleep in his home. Why not just turn the palace of Versace into a museum instead of a hotel? Showcase his beautiful works of fashion instead of allowing the masses to sleep where Versace was murdered?

What is the attraction too a murder scene?? Especially to the murder scene of a celebrity? I do not see a monument in the area that Jayne Mansfield was decapitated. Do you see the lines around The Dakota where John Lennon was assassinated? Do you see the lines around other famous “landmarks” such as The Chelsea Hotel where Sid Vicious killed his girlfriend known to the punk world as “Nauseating Nancy” Spurgeon.

What happened to the days of respecting the dead? What happened to the days of “Historical Markers” proclaiming the birthplace of George Washington Carver or the “Battle of Wounded Knee?” There are many “Historical Markers” throughout the United States that I doubt that many people know of. One such marker stands at the site of the infamous “Alfred Packer Massacre.” If you don’t know what that is, research it, it’s a good read. Plus there is several movies about Alfred Packer, one that was created by the two geniuses that made “South Park” called “Cannibal! The Musical.”

But back to my original point, I find it appalling and disgusting that the home of Versace is now a hotel.
